CCH is going to be 53-39 at the end of 2024 (57.6%).
You had to be there. We were feared. One of the only games I got to go to was against Florida. We weren’t looking for an upset. They were. No such luck. And you can’t appreciate the beauty of taking down McGuire’s Gamecocks and seeing the total shock on their faces.
And just getting into the tourney meant you were in the Sweet 16, so wins were much harder to get.

My church basketball team in high school was young and inexperienced our first year, as in 0 wins terrible. Year 3 we played for The Church league championship. I scored 24 points in a game. Before the 3 point shot.

The problem with FU Hoopla's posts is they are dismissive of the football team. After a loss he posted something like "at least basketball season begins soon." For a football fan, we don't wanna hear that in our season on the UFFP's football thread. It sounds somehow insulting, invites an unparallel comparison, and is just plain whiney.
But let me get to the real issues for FU Hoopla. Possums have the shortest gestation of any mammal in North America. Its only 12.5 days. The little babies, called joeys, are pumped out of the filthy possum vagina 16 to 25 in a batch. Each nasty little baby is about the size of a booger, and is hairless, pink and repugnant. I do not know if they are edible. I do know you can roll them in EZ Wider but they don't smoke good. These days I like Basketball WAY more than Football...

I will agree here. Dam NIL and portal now Ole Miss and UGA have 7 million dollars worth of football players. I recall someone said Ole Miss paid Furman's ENTIRE TEAM 500k for the "money game" and yet paid 800K to ONE single Defensive Lineman. Fortunately with a more level playing field than football has (only 5 players on the court at a time lol), we can still compete with the Power schools in Hoops!
And even basketball they are more rare. Example - Auburn bought JP away from us. So even basketball is more rare... but it does happen. - Definitely more possible than football - top 25 UCLA basketball just lost to New Mexico etc. Several P5 were threatened by "smaller" schools. Villanova lost to Columbia a few days ago !

But back to football. Back when I was a freshman I went to my very first Furman game ever. September 15, 1979. It was against Presbyterian College, in that haggard crone we knew as Sirrine Stadium. Ah the glory. The glory. I recall not even knowing what was meant by Blue Hose... and now I think "could I ever have been that young?" We lost 10-17, but even in losing I knew I had stumbled upon a pearl of great price.
About that football game: We drank and drove the way over to the stadium, drank beer at the halftime, and I think we snuck in whiskey for the second half. I know I was carted around by a guy from my freshman hall named George, and that he had a blue pick 'em up truck. We chewed tobacco. I know there was a trip to some mysterious island called a "Clock Drive In". Oh, I do recommend whatever it is I had, whatever it was... the memories fade.
I fetched up the contents of my stomach right outside Poteat Hall that evening. It was about a gallon. We were too naive back then to take an accurate measurement.
The next morning I awoke in my sparse freshman dorm room and looked out the window at the beautiful autumn day. And there on the ground, underneath my window, was a possum eating my vomit pile. He paused, as if choking, then looked up at me. Our eyes met. And he said (telepathically I'm assuming) "Those Furman boys are having a rough start, but bide your time and things will one day turn in our favor." And he was right, that ol' marsupial friend of mine, for the Paladins started that season 0-5 yet went on to win 5 of their last six games. And that's how dynasties begin.
