Uh-oh. We need to be sure to keep CH’sM away from UC-Davis and Illinois State.

They seem to have strong development programs that may interest it.

Still need at least one fullback type. Roberto type that doesn’t go down easily.
Hopefully he comes back full speed, but don't forget how fast and physical Jayquan Smith is. He backed up Roberto and missed this season, but he almost assuredly would have been the primary dude in 2024.

A healthy Smith is a big bruising runner. I do not necessarily believe we need a more traditional fullback, because a lot of those roles can be accomplished by other guys on the roster (DTs, TEs, etc.)
I don't think we are going to see fullback in the traditional sense at Furman under this offensive staff.

Jayqan I hope is healthy. He should be about 210 and able to run the middle. Bell cow. Hall is 190. Nettles will initially be more of a 3rd down guy I think because (I met him in airport) he looks about 180 soaking wet.

We are going to be a lot of 11 and 12 I think given our riches at TE and WR. Run a lot of OZ and stretch concepts, attack the perimeter, throw TE over the middle and y stick type stuff mixed in with a lot of IZ/power/duo. Attack every blade kind of offense.
FUATT, I too hope that Jayquan is healthy. He looked great in the few times I saw him get a touch however a year + injury can be a scary thing. Sometimes the kid is never quite the same, I hope for his sake and Furman he is

F all these butterflies.

They’ve ruined college sports.

On a related note, JP Pegues played all of 4 minutes and was 0-2 from the field in Auburns loss to Duke last night. Hope he enjoys being a scout team player.
THIS. He helped Duke ! But you know if he’s getting 400k or whatever I too would take that and ride pine vs be an unpaid Furman player. He isn’t NBA. Needs to get that money NOW. Put away in a Roth IRA that’s a strong start. I get it

Doesn’t mention the mustache. FUBeAR, ever the optimist, is going to assume it’s staying…

Diversity of uniform selections is nice. Strong pics. There are better font choices for the header.
Word is the stache is sadly staying.
Oh wow !!! Hadn’t been here in a few days. This stinks. No loyalty in college anywhere.

REAL QUESTION- how can Furman survive and adapt in this era where we try to develop guys and then they just leave once they get good enough that an NIL makes an offer or something? I don’t doubt he can get some money somewhere…. I mean if we struggle to get transfers IN to Furman how are we gonna survive with transfers leaving? Somewhat similar to Clemson… people are leaving but none coming via portal so they have dropped a tier from top 5 to top 15/20. No longer would they make the old 4 team playoff there.

If those transfers leaving exceed those transfers coming each year or in general how can Furman sustain? Real question. Thoughts ? Any thoughts. Maybe we can’t?

I believe the transfer portal officially opens on Monday.

I'm not sure what Furman's official position is, but we have brought back a number of players over the last few years that had entered their name. For many college programs, this kicks off a period of effectively "re-recruiting" your own roster.

I thought these were good comments by Wasu's coach, Jake Dickert. He sort of identifies three types of kids in the portal, (1) walk-ons that don't have a sure position, (2) guys that need opportunities to play, (3) contributors being offered by bigger schools. I suppose a school like Furman would add a fourth category - graduate students looking to continue their academic pursuits.

Come to The Well today at Noon and see how.

The example for CCH is a few doors down the athletic dept hallway.

I think there are a few things. First, lets begin with some assumptions: Furman is not going to pay the revenue share and were not going to have meaningful NIL opportunities for football. That's our baseline.

1. . At present, we really have two impact players (Hinton and Maier) and two depth players (Balliew and Robinson) in the portal. And a LS. The one that I think the coaches really wish they could retain is Hinton. So we are not getting gashed - at present, lets get through next week - on the order many programs are. This is because our culture is very strong, value of a Furman degree well understood, all the intangibles. But the first issue in any situation is to understand if you are having an "issue" or a "crisis." I think Furman has an issue with the portal, not a crisis. IF we had, say Ryan Earl and another OL leaving for a fifth year, Hedden in portal, Hinton in portal, Moson in portal, that would be a crisis.

2. The portal will taketh away and the portal will giveth. We are hitting the portal hard. We are likely to add OL, CB and RB and that will UPGRADE our talent in these position. The portal is not a one way street. We will have to be committed and active in this space and be willing to trade up where we can.

3. Furman needs to develop a realistic graduate level degree opportunity for Graduate Transfers. Right now, we are significantly challenged to bring in grad transfers given the 5 grad degrees we offer. Samford, for instance, another SoCon private, offers an MBA, several in Health Care, Master of Social Work, Organizational Leadership, Environmental Management etc. - they have options.

4. Double down on effective HS recruiting. Two things are working in our favor here. First, roster limits will force some guys down from FBS to FCS in HS recruiting and we have to find those guys on the margins and get them. Second, Furman is developmental on the OL and DL and sort of a QB for sure but we are going to have to get more Colton Hintons, and Evan James and Trey Heddens and guys that come in and have an immediate impact, especially at the skill positions. The new world order creates good HS opportunities for Furman. We are going to have to have more of a "play them now" mindset. This is not terrible because other programs are getting poached and will be forced into this too. But we will need to get more guys more snaps more early.

5. Ultimately, be the best version of who we are. Furman should look at the other D1 privates and, being realistic about resources, examine who is managing the portal era well and who is not, copy best practices where we can find one innovative thing we can do if we can.

So I am not in a panic, yet, about the portal. If we do get totally gashed this year or in a succeeding year, I reserve the right to change my view :)

Wow losing Hinton and Chappell and missing out on Stewart to Mercer is tough. I know we had an unexpectedly bad season but this seems a bit strange given our really stable coaching situation. Is this just the new norm everywhere or do we have a problem?

Interesting that Chappell thanks an NIL organization.

Just a new world in college football. I guess we'll see what the roster looks like when the carousel stops.

Does inform a bit where some programs are starting to hire a "GM" type position (see Andrew Luck at Stanford). All of this movement and roster building is just so far beyond what former coaching staffs used to have to deal with in terms of their roster.

NIL is no longer exists. Clempson just built a building to house their payroll department. One thing to remember is there are many more players in the portal than those that will exit.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
