Was it worth it to burn a red-shirt? Ceiling implies later..years down the road.

I have a feeling at least one Furman QB will enter the Portal at the end of this season.

This was my concern. Let's say 8 comes in as the the man with a P5 arm and world beater, you roll the dice, let the freshman start and he has a huge year. My bet, he's on the move. Or, we struggle by rolling the dice. 5 and 8 both leave not seeing a winning path forward or disappointment by the lack of confidence vote by the staff. Or, you go with 5 have a decent year without freshman mistakes and he's your young QB with multiple years left in the program and 8 leaves because he has a P5 arm and wants to play.

Or Garcia - who has yet to see the field this year - finds a school closer to home where he can be The Man.

I've thought about bringing this up multiple times this year, but decided against it because it's hard to know what kids will do. Yes, they all want to play, but some kids just like being at Furman as well.

I have no inside info, but I did mention to Jackal that I thought it was surprising that we didn't have any QB offers (that we know of) out because there is definitely a scenario where we only have 1 scholarship QB when the portal opens. I won't speculate what any of the 3 QBs will do, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if one left. And just to be clear, this is a problem for almost every school. It's hard to keep more than 3 quality scholarship QBs on a roster for more than a season now.

Hopefully they all stay, but I would be surprised if it happened. Unfortunately, a lot of schools at this level are dealing with the same thing to some degree.

The portal will open at the end of the regular season, the day after the College Football Playoff field and bowl games are announced. According to the NCAA, the portal will open for business Monday, Dec. 9, 2024, and close on Dec. 28.

Maybe we should switch to an offense nobody at the next level uses. Then you go get the ultra athlete-type QB’s who’re all world in HS but have no place to go without changing positions. So once they’re here, they’re trapped unless they want to join the Army or Navy.

I wouldn't worry too much about the Portal. I entered the portal last winter and I got very few offers. The portal isn't real. Its like astrology or homeopathy or Lady GaGa - they only exist inside people's minds.

Going forward I think the guy who figures out how to manage the portal is going to be the guy who wins. About the only person arguing the other way is Dabo. The old player development thing is pretty much dead because you’re just developing them for somebody else.

I hear you on the portal.

It also would not surprise me if we pick up a QB in the portal. Two can play at that game.

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
