I’ve been with my dad at McCall Hospice House for the last week. He died last night at the age of 90. By the way, McCall Hospice is a gift from God. I became a Furman fan when my dad started taking me to football games at Sirrine Stadium and to basketball games at the Brown Box. RA Day was always something to look forward to. My dad only had a 10th grade education so he never was afforded the opportunity to attend Furman. But he did have a degree in the school of hard knocks and in the field of being a kind and loving man. He loved all things Furman, living his dream of attending the great university through his grandson (my son). It is a great reminder that there are many supporters that did not attend Furman. He is the reason I get upset at those fans and supporters that criticize the university or any of our athletic teams. He was always positive about our Paladins. May he rest in purple peace. Go Paladins!

Really sorry to hear that, Roundball. Family is so much more important that FU athletics. But awesome that you honor him by cheering for the Paladins in a way befitting your father's example. Praying for your comfprt and guidance at this difficult time.

Fans like your Dad were our ‘rocks’ during FUBeAR’s playing days at FU.

The Furman Football and Basketball Athletes, in those days, in general, other than being blessed with the opportunity to attend Furman, had much more in common with those types of Fans than we did the vast majority of the other Furman students. We loved interacting with the locals that were just plain old fans and had no desire to ‘trade up’ and support Clempson or Carolina. They just loved Furman as ‘their’ Team and that’s all there was to it. Not sure with the transition of the demographics of Greenville and of Furman if there are many of those types of fans remaining and involved today, but they were definitely most beloved by the Players and Coaches of the past.

Given that and the info you shared, your Dad’s departure from his earthly bonds most certainly deserves the highest of tributes from the denizen here…

I am glad you brought up those trade up fans. I remember my dad proudly displaying his “Rose between two thorns” bumper sticker. If anyone has a picture of that bumper sticker, post it for us.

I remember my old man, gone for nearly 30 years now, watching the Paladins play Holy Cross at Sirrine on the visitors' side. He was a Clemson man, but I had just about decided to go to Furman, and he missed very few home games while I was there. It was good to read your memories. -- MD
