To the best of FUBeAR’s recollection, Ole Miss didn’t really “run up the score” on Mercer.

FUBeAR recalls Mercer gave up numerous quick / long-ish TD passes, could not move the ball with any consistency on O, and gave up very short fields / scores on Special Teams turnovers and lapses in kick/punt coverage.

The Rebels substituted liberally in the 1st half and pulled their Starters after 1 series in the 2nd half (that’s kind of an ‘unwritten rule’ for out-of-hand games early in the season - Starters need game reps) with the score @ 52-7. The next 3 TD’s were sustained long drives with Ole Miss 2nd & 3rd Teams vs. Mercer’s mostly 2nd Teamers.

Don’t recall anyone from MU being upset with Coach Freshwater. It’s a Team’s job to score and stop the other Team. If you don’t do either of those things, the score will be what it will be. It ain’t on the other Team to keep any snowflakes on their opponents’ sidelines from melting.

Mercer made several personnel changes in the secondary and on Special Teams in the subsequent weeks, which certainly helped, but the Bears’ O never seemed to be able to consistently put together drives…which is why one might look at their Playoff game score with SDSU and think the Bunnies ran up the score - nope - just 0 Offense / short fields, and an exhausted D.

Tell ya what PO’s FUBeAR more is when the FBS Team has the game won over the FCS Team…say 24-14 … with 1:30 left … and they’re throwing it deep to try to make their score “look” better @ 31-14. That calls for a bone-crushing post-game handshake from FUBeAR.
Fair enough. I just saw the box score and usually most FBS slow down in second half. Lane Kiffin still isn’t my favorite though ;)

Last year Ole Miss came out with guns ablazing against Mercer. They went 71 yards in 3 plays in 51 seconds on their first possession. They scored 4 TD’s in the first quater in under 5 minutes of possession time and had well over 200 yds. They will be ready for FU.

Yep - Mercer’s DB’s could not cover - not like they got beat deep - just letting guys run free in ‘holes’ in their coverage on RPO’s…and then they could not tackle at all.

It was like watching a college team play against a middle school team. FUBeAR would assess that 60% of that was due to the talent level of Ole Miss’ Players and 40% was due to Mercer’s DB’s just not being ‘in the game.’ Not sure why they were so bad. They fired 1 starting CB and 1 (of 3) Safety in the next few weeks…so maybe that was it - 40% of their Secondary that started against Ole Miss was firing-worthy … which led to that poop-show.

So…FUBeAR’s Coaching Pro-Tip to avoid that is … Don’t start guys, making up almost 1/2 of your secondary, that you are going to bury on the bench for the remainder of the season.

Ready…BREAK!

Let’s do more of the 3rd play shown!

Thanks for the video. Ole Miss throwng the bomb up 59-7. That was ugly. The question is will the FU game be as ugly, less ugly or more ugly. Probably the latter with our new offense and new defense, but hoping for the best. Noticed a lot of empty seats even at the first part.

Back-ups on back-ups. 30 yard play action pass. Just running their O.

Maybe the Mercer R-FR back-up Safety, who bit like a great white shark on the post-fake (PoGo), learned something, when it didn’t matter - always the best time to learn. It was a controlled scrimmage after the 1st quarter.

It was all good.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
