Not a great weekend of FCS football. Closest game was 14 points. As usual, the Dakotas and Montana are left to fight it out.
Wow. Mercer made the SoCon look BAD. Holy Cow. Didn’t see the game but saw the score. Sheesh. The Mercer offense concerned me going in. This was BAD for the SoCon. OTOH you can’t blame Mercer as much as our other teams. Mercer did the best of everyone. Sad that our best means a DRUBBING of 31 - 7. Not much defense for that. 31 - 7? Over at half time. Every time I hear an NDSU or SDSU guy say “we might be in trouble” vs team X … I laugh. They are never in trouble.

Oh what I wouldn’t give for Furman to have that talent etc.

Thanks to Affirm and FB for the question/answer regarding the service academies. I've wondered about that myself.
Consider this. The Academies only lose transfers OUT. you cannot transfer IN to a service academy - Only exports. ZERO TRANSFERS IN. I mean you can’t join West Point as a Sophomore. Have to be there from the start. we say we have it hard at Furman. Please. We do have it tough with our academics but not anything like the Academies. We have it easy compared to the service Academies. AND they can only get guys willing to commit to military service afterwards. And some military rigors while in school. Have a friend with son at AFA. How are they such great teams? They would probably win FCS national title !!!

Furman appears to target the same type of kids as the Academies. Not surprising given The background of CCH. You can leave in your first two years without repercussions however if you decide to go after that time you will be called immediately to active duty as an enlisted member. Very rare for anyone choosing to go that route.

GF- the academies are national treasures that “recruit” nationally.
They have it easier? We only have about 62 scholarships and is $80 for walk-ons while the academies have unlimited scholarships.
Apples and oranges to put it mildly.

… and, despite claims to the contrary, the SA’s do sometimes get inbound transfers…

https://vanderbilt.rivals.com/news/ful ... long-dream

…and they each have Prep Schools with Football Teams … that enables them to recruit an additional roster full of HS Players every year - almost always kids who didn’t quite cut it academically for the SA’s as a ‘direct admit,’ and develop them for a year, while running the same O & D schemes as the actual SA does. IOW, they can redshirt an entire Freshman class of 60-70, in addition to the 50 or so Freshmen they will direct admit each class.

GF-we had that talent in 2023, but it was a one time thing due to several reasons. We had one chance, one play away from a home game in the semi-finals. Unfortunately a false start took that chance away.

Talented in 2023? I think you posted many many times we were terrible in 2023 and that "we are not who we think we are" and that CCH should be fired and on and on. Indeed, if it were not for your numerous posts pointing out how poor Furman was FUTEX would not have put on his perpetual happy hat of optimism to counter your doom and gloom. So, in a round-about way, we owe our rather advanced collective knowledge of possumry to you.

Nope. Wrong. I’ve watched it now. Mercer got azz kicked. No offense to speak of . Only defense. 31-7. Please. I’m Glad they got in playoffs. Just Wish they repped the SoCon better. Honestly coulda lost to CAA easily. Saw that game. I knew NDSU would be a 2 TD + favorite on Mercer after that. And they were. NDSU minus a bunch.

I was pulling for Mercer. Go SoCon. But it was a foregone conclusion.

I always want SoCon to do well. But we haven’t in a loooong time. Just facts

Mercer EIGHT FIRST DOWNS. EIGHT.
NDSU Twenty first downs.

Mercer was ONE FOR THIRTEEN on 3rd and 4th downs. That’s Horrible !

Mercer about TWO HUNDRED YARDS Total. Sheesh. that’s Horrible
NDSU 400 yards

Mercer plus one turnover ratio. And still lost by TWENTY FOUR points.

You can tell NDSU fans are used to being there. Many posts like. “ This game is irrelevant… neither team can beat SDSU”. Because of their success they have a more realistic view. Funny as Ndsu fans were often more critical of their team in a big win than Mercer fans were in a big loss. It’s telling. NDSU fans have different aspirations. As they should. The semifinals is a bad year for them.

SoCon can’t get a team in semifinals

At least SoCon has made quarterfinals last two years and had seeds. Now we need to win at least one more game.
————

I do enjoy all the FCS and FBS playoffs.

I think the FCS TITLE could be a battle this year. Maybe SDSU vs Montana State …

That’s a stretch, but whatever makes you happy. FU all the time. Carry on with your possum silliness.

It's been 11 years since Georgia Southern and App State departed. Let's check in.

App went 5-6 and won't play in a bowl. They've played in a few bowl games over the past 10 years, but almost exclusively the bottom tier (Camellia Bowl, Myrtle Beach Bowl, New Orleans Bowl, etc.)

Georgia Southern went 8-4 and will play in the New Orleans Bowl against 9-3 Sam Houston State. That bowl game has averaged around 15k fans the last few years, so even conservatively will fill up a tiny fraction of the Superdome.

It's a little sad to see these historic FCS powers, who won 8 and 9 games, playing one another in a mostly-empty stadium in a December exhibition game that will barely register a blip on the college football radar. They could have stayed put and would be playing for a national title right now in front of their sold out home stadium.

The perceived plight of App and GSU when they have a losing record every now and then does not make me feel any better about how absolutely irrelevant and putrid SoCon football has become.............

FU football has a grand total of 4 playoff wins since 2005 against the likes of SC State, Elon, Elon, UTC

The SoCon has not had a member in the title game since App St. in 2007.....
I believe the SoCon has also not even had anyone in the Semifinals since GSU lost in the 2012 Semifinals.........

In 2012, App had 12,248 applicants. 17,431 were enrolled.

In 2022, the last year I can find data, 22,255 applied to App State. That is an enormous increase.

Today, Apps enrollment is 21,253, up almost 4,000, and making them more selective. Largest in school history. Opened a new campus in Hickory.

Assuming I am not misinterpreting this data, one could make an argument that raising their football brand has been very good for App State.

Wow - that’s a pretty BIG LEAP to causality.

You could be 100% correct OR it could be the viewership of either or both of these videos (1 overview of Appy & 1 example of one of their best & brightest students) has built the HOT HOT HOT, such as, Appy brand…

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
