Samford beat WCU 35-12 today. Western had more yards passing, more yards rushing,and had to punt fewer times. How did they lose? Samford had 4 TD drives of 80 yards or more and all of Western's scores were from FGs. WCU also had two more turnovers.
Western got deep in Samford territory several times and couldn’t convert touchdowns.
A lot of the game was WCU trading touchdowns for field goals.
That said, samford is playing better defensively than they have in a while. We can’t beat them playing like we did today.

Compare. Western Carolina put 52 on CSU. we had what. 24? Now on D, WCu. allowed 38 to CSU. We allowed only 19.

The offense is scoring 28 ppg. We made a TON of mistakes today. A lot of those mistakes were on special teams that put us in terrible offensive field position. We had some miscues on defense. We fumbled the ball, we made some bad decisions in the passing game. All of that and still won on the road.

What happened last week is last week. Trying to compare outcomes with common opponents is useless as well. You can not predict what a team will do this week based on a common opponent from 3 weeks ago. Anyone who has ever played the game or has a true understanding of the game knows this. What Samford did previously means squat. The same holds true for FU. The team that plays the most complete game will have the best chance to win next week.

CLemsons weak performance vs us (relative to expectations) and then weak performance vs La Tech - relative to expectations- indicated they would struggle vs a decent passing team w more talent. And. They. Did. Today at wake they hit right near the one TD Spread winning in OT. and I’ll go on record - ON RECORD - thst t this CLemson edition is overrated and ain’t doing Shiite in a CFP if they get there. I’m betting on myself. And you can’t say “yeah but you’ve seen them play games..”. According to your theory if you SIMPLY WIN (last week is last week”) you are on to the future. Nope. CLemson ain’t winning a title. Past is indicative of the future. Trevor Lawrence team I could see was winning it all. And they did. Not this edition. But your thing of “as long as you win then you are on to next week and past outcomes mean nothing”. Hmm. Then since tigers are 4-0 you they are least could win em all. NOPE. NOPE. They don’t have it. I can see it. Or lack of it. Anyhoo. All that to say. There is a predictive nature to sports. People often say a great player will bite as a pup (young dog). So will a great team. I don’t see us there yet. Hopefully soon. Teams do change
The NHC's latest track has what is soon to be Hurricane Ian coming in at the Florida Panhandle, then moving north with a track just west of us. If that track holds, knowing it will change many times between now and this weekend, we are in for some heavy rain and strong winds. Hopefully, the storm picks up some speed after it hits land and move through us on Friday. Just something else to watch as this big game gets closer. Go Paladins!

When the DINS win, you often give back-handed compliments under the caveat of being honest.
When the DINS lose or, as in yesterday's case, have a less than stellar outing and still win. You take on the I told you so and are quick to call out those of us that are more optimistic.
Chill out on calling us Roper Quarterback people, just as you have a right to show up only during football season and be the voice of true honesty. Some of us are on the board year-round.
Unless I was watching another game — our backup QB came in and led the team to its touchdowns and a come-from-behind victory.

When the DINS lose or, as in yesterday's case, have a less than stellar outing and still win. You take on the I told you so and are quick to call out those of us that are more optimistic.

A few takeaways from last year's end-of-the-season match with Samford.
Jace Wilson was 7 of 11 passing for 145 yards and a touchdown. Jace also ran for 31 yards and another score. Roberto had a breakout game rushing for 216 and two scores. Abrams had 110 yards. Furman only had four players catch a pass.
I watched the WCU/Samford game. Western and their coach - lost their sh!t at times in that game - and Samford took advantage. I'm guessing Samford's game plan for Carlos Davis will be noted by the SoCon schools playing WCU. Samford hit him the entire game.
All but one of Samford's scores were 20 yards or more. Samford only rushed for 101 years; 49 were on a touchdown run in the 4th quarter. Chandler Smith appears to be Hiers go to guy.

Philosophically, Samford is usually trying to score from outside the red zone. Their offense utilizes the space on the field to operate, and the closer to the goal line, the less space they have. This Samford team is a little bit different than prior iterations. They aren't quite as high flying on offense as they have been in the past. They aren't throwing it quite as much as usual. They are running it a bit bitter. The defense is playing better.
Heirs does not appear to be the run threat that Welch or Hodges was. So, that's an element of the offense that does not seem to be as prevalent with the QB escaping on the run, especially in the red zone.
In my opinion, our defense is going to present a much bigger challenge to the Bulldog offense than their prior FCS games, especially our defensive backfield. It's looking like Kennesaw State probably isn't the top 10 team voters thought in the preseason. Samford struggled to beat Tennessee Tech.
Their game against WCU has an odd storyline. WCU had 32 first downs, 450+ yards of offense, ran 90 plays, and scored only 12 points. Samford was the better team, but those are odd statistics for the end result.

While yesterday wasn't pretty, Furman is among the league leaders in most offensive categories through 4 games.
The Paladin offense is #2 in scoring offense, #1 in rush offense, #3 in passing offense.
On paper, Furman is the favorite in this game. Better offensively. Better defensively. Playing at home.
One area of real concern for Samford would be Furman's penchant for forcing turnovers. 13 takeaways including 8 interceptions are an area of Furman's game the Bulldogs are going to want to avoid. While our defense has been susceptible to big plays, they also do a pretty good job of punishing teams for balls not thrown directly on target.
