So, a few thoughts.
First, the kid can clearly spin it. You don't put up his passing stats in 7A Florida football without being able to throw it.
Second, he - like many Furman QB targets - is under 6'0 tall. I think there is gobs of evidence from the last 30 years showing that shorter QBs are an odd recruiting fit for a lot of teams. There is also a lot of evidence where some of those under-recruited QBs become really good players.
Third, Furman looks like they've taken quite a few walk-on QBs. I think this is a good strategy. Often QBs are going to be some of the better athletes on their high school teams. Furman has a long history of taking good athletic high school QBs and converting them to contributors at other positions.
Fourth, I also don't believe we really know how COVID affected recruiting the last year or two - schedule changes, inability to travel, curtailed seasons, etc. This kid had some sub-D1 offers, and maybe he's taking a chance to bet on himself and prove what he can at this level.
