Furman waited 43 flippin years to see our glorious men's basketball program hang a banner. Go to the basketball site to spew your garbage. Wait, there isn't a basketball site. CCH and Furman football will recover and hang banners! We won't have to wait to party in 2066 like basketball.
FU Basketball - I am going to defend it
OK

Go!

(Take 23 posts if you need to. The floor is yours.)
(Also - remember - you can only post 3 image links per post, so posting a dumpster fire meme for almost every one of these 23 consecutive seasons is going to take a while)

I only need one line...

Bob Richey made FU Basketball Great Again!
OK - but as a Furman Fan, that just doesn’t help FUBeAR, in any way, process a full generation of awful to mediocre, on rare occasions, Furman Basketball results.

If one anomalously poor season of Furman Football, following a season of a being an eyelash (& 9 egregious non-calls) away from playing & likely winning a home Semifinal game vs. NDSU, and a 4th trip to an NCAA Division 1 National Championship game, sends you into such a spiral of repetitive doomsday posting about Furman Football, how in Coach Sheridan’s name were you unable to refrain from unaliving yourself while wandering in the dark desert that was Furman Basketball for so many consecutive seasons?

You said you were here to “defend Furman Basketball.” You haven’t addressed those 23 consecutive seasons of almost exclusively FAIL even a little bit.

Since you can’t seem to do what you said you were here to do, maybe it will be helpful for some of us to cope with this 1 completely atypical Furman Football season, if you would just share the actions you took during that nearly interminable stretch of misery that Furman Basketball must have brought to you. How were you possibly able to keep going and keep the faith during those 8,395 days of an abject paucity of success?
The fact you in this discussion proves you have an agenda...

I enjoyed watching some good Football at FU in 2022 and 2023, maybe don't give me such a hard time
So…NO defense for 23 seasons of SUCK, then? Got it. Didn’t think you would.

Maybe don’t give Furman Football “such a hard time” for a single rough season, when the sport that you worship, and you, stupidly, think is harmed in some way by Furman Football, was, recently, the @$$-end of a dying sow for over 2 decades.

Of course FUBeAR has an “agenda.” Multi-faceted.

1) Expose your stupid agenda for the juvenile exercise that it is.
2) Demonstrate to all readers that you are utterly incapable of backing up your blithering, bile-filled bs about Furman Football that provides less than zero value to anyone, and, potentially, is harmful; which you well-know, as that is clearly a primary pillar of your nonsensical agenda.
3) Entertain some readers - maybe not all, but definitely some. FUBeAR has a FanFollowing.
4) As always, first & foremost, entertain FUBeAR.

CHECK, CHECK, CHECK, and CHECK-a-roo.

Done with wasting time and pixels on you and your inanity.

Dude, you're getting all worked up and losing the plot........

FUBeAR aka Chior Boy lol, and who knows how many other accounts you have here...
This just keeps getting better.....
1.FUBeAR and Choir Boy are actually one guy with multiple accounts...next thing you know old Fred will be outed as part of this conspiracy against the mighty filler sport
2. Chior???? .......
3. Oh the days of getting our championship recognitions each year at the GMA.....usually the biggest crowd of the year since the old hoopsters were DFL

It would make alot of sense though...
FUBear creates the Chior Boy account that has pretty much one purpose here, to spew venom and crappola about the Basketball program and posts pretty much nothing else...
Then FUBear can get off free as a bird talking his smack under a different account without looking like the psychopath that is Chior Boy...
FUBear has already addmitted to having an agenda, so I would certainly not put it past him to do that...
Pretty genius of you FUBear :D

I get it, a few of you guys are frustrated about being ranked #9 preseason and now seeing the season unfold into a crap show you need somewhere/someone to vent your frustration, a tale as old as time...
But trust me I had nothing to do with the awful season we are having, your time might be better spent voicing your frustrations elsewhere, or not its up to you of course and all good with me ;)

I am rooting for FU Football to turn it around, hopefully by next year...
I hope all of you will join me in rooting for the Basketball program...

Poopla aka shit for brains......this all started when you posted a) the dumpster fire and b) what our football record is going to be next year....Give it a break. I have been on the site since inception and am friends with Bootie, Flagman and the Honorable Stumpy since this site first started. In fact I helped with the initial funding.

I have retired from a 40+ year Global Corporate America job and have a lot of free time on my hand while living on an Island in Florida. I have heard from friends about a couple of asinine posters who were dragging this site down. So I have reengaged to see for myself.......a mistake on my part as. you proved an assumption I have had that not all FU graduates are smart.

I have broken a gold rule that my mom taught me in....If you don't have anything nice to say about someone, don't say anything at all......but you take the Cake....What do use for birth control.....your personality??

As far as Bball at FU....I go back as far as smoking a J in the Library bathroom with Stitch and the white boy from DeMatha? I have forgotten more about FU basketball than you know.

Give it a break and best of luck to the Bball team this season.....like I have said in the past I just hope we do not have another 40+ year gap in tourney appearance, as I won't be around to see it....

Lastly, Fred G., FUBear & I are not the same person or poster, but we did play on a number Football SoCon Championships together.....but we have stayed at Holiday Inn's

Still think you're FUBear in disguise...
Regardless...
You stop posting shit talk about the Hoops program, which has been just about the only posts you have made in your 100 posts for about 2 years now and I won't go around posting a trash can about our 2-7 football team...

There are many good and relevant points made here by tim, Cave, Furmalum, Tulley, and others. Good points and well made indeed.

But back to football. Back when I was a freshman I went to my very first Furman game ever. September 15, 1979. It was against Presbyterian College, in that haggard crone we knew as Sirrine Stadium. Ah the glory. The glory. I recall not even knowing what was meant by Blue Hose... and now I think "could I ever have been that young?" We lost 10-17, but even in losing I knew I had stumbled upon a pearl of great price.

About that football game: We drank and drove the way over to the stadium, drank beer at the halftime, and I think we snuck in whiskey for the second half. I know I was carted around by a guy from my freshman hall named George, and that he had a blue pick 'em up truck. We chewed tobacco. I know there was a trip to some mysterious island called a "Clock Drive In". Oh, I do recommend whatever it is I had, whatever it was... the memories fade.

I fetched up the contents of my stomach right outside Poteat Hall that evening. It was about a gallon. We were too naive back then to take an accurate measurement.

The next morning I awoke in my sparse freshman dorm room and looked out the window at the beautiful autumn day. And there on the ground, underneath my window, was a possum eating my vomit pile. He paused, as if choking, then looked up at me. Our eyes met. And he said (telepathically I'm assuming) "Those Furman boys are having a rough start, but bide your time and things will one day turn in our favor." And he was right, that ol' marsupial friend of mine, for the Paladins started that season 0-5 yet went on to win 5 of their last six games. And that's how dynasties begin.

tl;dr - You gotta follow the X's and O's people, and embrace the possumry.
FU Tex, that story reminds me of the time me and a bunch of friends went down to Clinton for an away football game vs Presbyterian about 1974 or 1975. There was a party at the Holiday Inn after the game so on the way over I came to a 5 point intersection. I didn't know which way to go and a pickup truck cut me off and I gave him the finger. Unfortunately the pickup truck turned out to be an unmarked police vehicle and he turned on his blue lights and pulled me over. After I was in handcuffs in the truck the officer told the friend I was with who had drunk about 8 beers to "drive your friend's car and follow us to the station". We managed to talk our way out of it and they let us go but I don't remember how we did it.

Was also in a minor car crash in downtown Greenville, NC enroute to an away East Carolina-Furman football game. FYI it is a long way from Greenville, SC to Greenville, NC but being only 20 years old helps.

Dear FU Hoopla,

I'm pretty sure I know who Choir Boy is IRL. Oh, he's a real person alright. As is Fred Garvin. They are not FUBear. Three distinct personages that all played around the 1982 mark. Don't go one-on-one with Choir Boy, because, if I remember correctly, he has really big hands.

But back to football. When FurmAlum went to that away game in Clinton, he wasn't concerned about the past Won-Lost record as much as he was concerned with winning against PC that day. And he wasn't taking pot shots at Furman Football in order to hype up the basketball program. No, he was making wise decisions involving alcohol and motor vehicle courtesy. You know, like that old joke about how many babies you can fit in a tire.

XOXOXO,
FUTex

One more thing - We all need to join the Paladin Club and the FFPA. Its part of my new Paladinology theory I have called the Paladinity Gospel. The more we give, the more we get. Furman wants us to prosper, so we give to it. You know, you can't outgive Coach Vaughn. If you give a dollar to the Paladin Club then Coach Vaughn will deliver more than a dollar's utility in other ways. Its a guarantee.
Maybe you are jesting, but if not:
•Why (really how) would one join FFPA if one is not a FFP?
•What %age of all FFP’s are members of FFPA?
•What %age of current Furman Football success is due to FFPA?
I'm not a former player and I joined a few years ago. I don't know that it matters, in that its a social group, yes, but they want the money to buy this and that for the gym and whatnot. I guess ask Bruce or Hollis. It costs like $75. See this link:
https://alumni.furman.edu/ffpa-membership-dues

I don't know what percent of former players are members. I assume its a far cry from what they want it to be, as these things tend to be.

The percent success of Furman Football that is due to the FFPA is undetermined. Football success determination is a multivariate analysis, and the causes complex. One obvious underpinning for success is recruiting better athletes, and the kind of projects the FFPA have completed have really put a nice dressing on some things that make the place more attractive for all concerned. (I recall them purchasing new carpet for the locker room or gym or something a while back.) Also, they do this tailgate thing, and a group of tall people getting together to talk about their glory days and drink too much and embarrass their wives sounds like a worthwhile cause to me.
The FFPA was started for all alumni football players, FU alumni, fans of FU football and parents of players to join. The goal was and is for to raise money for the sole purpose of supporting the football program. Membership has fluctuated throughout the years. What we have provided for the football program has ranged from improving the practice fields, computer software, gameday communications gear, recruiting travel for coaches, travel gear for the players, improvements to the training room, weight room and locker room. It is years like this when it is time to step up and give to the FFPA so that the program can continue to thrive. No one is happy with the results this year but this is TRULY a rebuilding year. Will next year be as good as the past 2 years? Who knows but improvement is expected. Furman is a special place and the players that come to FU know that and that is one of the biggest reasons to continue to support it!!

The problem with FU Hoopla's posts is they are dismissive of the football team. After a loss he posted something like "at least basketball season begins soon." For a football fan, we don't wanna hear that in our season on the UFFP's football thread. It sounds somehow insulting, invites an unparallel comparison, and is just plain whiney.

But let me get to the real issues for FU Hoopla. Possums have the shortest gestation of any mammal in North America. Its only 12.5 days. The little babies, called joeys, are pumped out of the filthy possum vagina 16 to 25 in a batch. Each nasty little baby is about the size of a booger, and is hairless, pink and repugnant. I do not know if they are edible. I do know you can roll them in EZ Wider but they don't smoke good. Anyway, the little tiny joeys crawl from the putrid possum abomination canal to the pouch, which is a distance of about two inches. There the little tiny joeys grapple onto an possum teet by swallowing it. Yessir, swallowing it. There they fester, these 16 to 25 reprehensible little freaks, until they get some wirey hair and develop them beady eyes, and then they come out and eventually make their way to a garbage can. And that's why FU Hoopla caught so much grief on this thread.

One post of many in the 'Basketball thread' by your buddy Choir Boy last year....

"HoopShit. I am not a Fan of FU BBall Lost interest sometime over the last 20 to 30 years when they were perpetual SOCON cellar dwellers.
One hit wonder every 40 years.
The football team will be in Frisco before the basketball team wins another NCAA tourney game."

There are many more posts like this that he has made disparaging the basketball program...
So in your words "They are dismissive of the basketball team. For a basketball fan, we don't wanna hear that in our season on the GoPaladins basketball thread. It sounds somehow insulting, invites an unparallel comparison, and is just plain whiney."

If you want to defend someone without being a hypocrite then you might want to find someone else to defend...
Glad I could set the record straight for you ;)

I know in a season that has FU in last place there has been little to discuss and this has somehow become one of the most popular threads of the season, but I would advise it gets locked one of these days in the near future as it going nowhere positive for any of us to be frank...

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
