I am sure Jake Bentleywill want to start somewhere. Very doubtful he could go to a power 5 and start knowng he has only one year especially coming off an injury.

What happened to Carson Maples?
Got hurt after game 1. Neck or something like that. He’s still on the roster.

After the GA State game I thought "well we would not be interested in Jake Bentley". WRONG!

Those were some really good assessments.

Regarding the QB situation, in my opinion, and it is a very humble one, as I have no FB playing or coaching experience, we need to have a little more patience. Both those guys have really improved since last year. But they were still RS freshmen with very little experience before this year. They need to be developed and not replaced. If they work hard in the off-season and improve as much as they did from last year to this year they ought to be ready for prime time by fall 2020.

We still need 2 good QB's, settling on 1 as The Man. But keep in mind JaVaughn Craig was not APSU's #1 QB. Oatsvall was the starter until he was injured early in the season.

Not to beat a dead horse but to say we did not show up to start the second half is an understatement. In under 5 minutes AP ran 8 plays for 170 yards and 3 touchdowns. That is over 21 yds per play. That is mind boggling and very disheartening and sobering.

As I go back and watch video clips - particularly the other team's highlights (i.e., Furman's "bad" play) - I see some encouraging signs.

There were plenty of instances of ugly football, but often you can see instances where we missed a block, made a bad decision, overran protection, etc. I think a lot of that has to do with playing mostly freshmen in the offensive backfield.

You can watch some of the bad plays from the season and see that it isn't so much getting physically beat at times as it is just problems with little things. I think those little things are likely to get corrected over time.

I think the big question for Furman is how those young players will grow together in this system. Next season, do they make the same mistakes?

We can look at it as a disappointing end to the season, which it was. I think it is also fair to say that we we had an 8 win season playing a bunch of young players and having a nearly entirely new coaching staff on defense. Are we going to get better? I think so.

K: Certainly seems like we will still have Grayson Atkins. No need to belabor this.

P: Would be nice to have a non-Atkins punter.

LS: Evan Vaughn, who has snapped for us a long time. He's handled every snap since 2016. I'm sure he's got a backup, I just don't know who it is.
My sources confirm that Grayson is gone. We will need a rebuild on the kicking game in 2020.

For the most part this was an enjoyable season (minus the blazing heat early on and then the rain later). Looking forward to next year....but there are some areas that were concerning that you all have addressed. I believe CCH is going in the right direction however. Someone asked about Shiflett. I do some business in the Dalton, GA area he is from and my customer knows the family well. Evidently he had a slight labrum tear and a bone chip in non throwing shoulder from a freak practice accident after GA State game. Tried to rehab for over a month in hopes small bone chip would settle down outside the joint and he could play but after a period of time they decided to go ahead and have surgery to remove chip and while they were in there they repaired the tear in labrum . He said spring ball will all depend on how rehab goes which has just started since we do our spring so early. Maybe participate with non contact Jersey. As far as QB or receiver who knows but I would not be surprised if he is at QB. Replacing Gordon will be a top priority and I would expect Shiflett ( if not at QB) to be a candidate there. Against physical teams we struggled offensively. Got to figure out how to spread the field more especially in red zone against teams like AP, Wofford, and Citadel. Recruiting seems to be going well. Curious if we pursue scholarship QB.? Early signing just a few weeks away.

I'm inclined to think we take a QB. We've offered a few.

Disappointing, but not surprising as I think we were all hoping for a miracle since it was first mentioned last year. Really curious to see where he goes and when it's announced. I hope he's not leaving due to any issues with Furman or the program.

I suppose one of his caliber can try to transfer to get more exposure at a bigger program.

Granted, the talented Wofford kid a few years ago (Mavin, I think) went from Wofford to UGA and hardly ever played.

That would be fascinating. Would be trying to replace a legend, but hard to turn down an opportunity to go to a school competing for an FBS playoff berth every year.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
