A large concern I still have is the lack of depth we have at the corner position. I realize we have offers out there, but I am unaware of any commitments. Just a thought.

Verna made an eye emoji tweet earlier so I figured we had a commit coming turns out it was from the Ball state transfer Preston Ross. A nice pick up for Furman. Had offers from Southern Miss, South Alabama, and Indiana State. 6’7” 248 lbs

Nice pickup.

Gives Furman another big body at TE. Paladins arguably go four deep at the position and potentially allows the Paladins to get creative using Burrell and Pryor as receivers.

It's a little bit hard to know how it will come down.

It is not as though we were stellar defensively in really any facet last season. It's an open question as to what improvement we may see with a more experienced defensive front and the return of multiple defensive backs that did not play last year with an injury.

Furman has two CBs returning that played a lot as freshmen - Darren Coleman and Javaris Jones. Coleman seem to get a lot of press during preseason workouts and seems like he may be a good option for us going forward. We also brought in two transfer students at CB, Eddie Jackson and Wesley Abraham. So, there should be good competition out there.

I also think it's going to help to have a lot of depth at safety. Last year we were painfully thin back there with injuries and one of our key transfers being unable to play, but this season we return that whole crew plus get a few guys back off the injured list hopefully.

It would not shock me to see Furman bring in another DB or two before fall practice starts.

Injuries are always a major concern at this level but certain positions are definitely more worrisome. Corner is certainly one of them right now.

I'm a little concerned about the depth/injury situation at Bandit and the defensive line as well. Chiedo hasn't played a ton due to injuries. Schuck played better than I expected, but he was supposed to be 4th string last year. Short has potential but is still very young. With X gone we probably have less playing time depth at NT than Bandit, but I'm hopeful with Hernandez and I'm still really high on Knauber. I guess Kauserud could move inside to NT with the weight he's added if needed. DE is in a similar position as Bandit. I liked what I saw from Stoneking before he got hurt, but Dobbins are Dykeman is going to have to progress quickly if we're going to continue to rotate players as often as we have in the past. In reality, I think most of us would feel better if Furman added at least 1-2 cornerbacks and 1-2 defensive linemen/Bandit...at least I would.

In regards to Jackal's comments about the safety position, I like how we could mix and match at Safety and Spur this year if everyone stays healthy before the season starts. I think Blaylock might be able to come in and win a starting spot meaning Burrell could start at Spur (or the other way around). Plus you'd still have McLeod, Lewis, and Hartwell as back ups. McLeod had to play a lot last year and Hartwell was going to start at Spur until he got hurt. I feel more confident at safety/spur than I do with corner right now.

Furman does still have offers out there and some guys in the portal can take their time. Kel Randell and Chris Thompson are 2 of those guys and Furman is their only offer at this point. Philjae Bien-Aime only has one other offer from Robert Morris. Unless they were offered and then not cleared by admissions, you would think Furman had a good shot to get at least one of them.
