Samford is really taking a hit with guys entering the portal now. Four more of their top guys have jumped in after Bucky took the Texas A&M job. That is in addition to the three who had announced exits earlier and the seniors they will lose.

As of right this moment they have four guys - two current freshmen and two incoming freshmen. They need a new coach quickly to calm things down, and get talking to current players and potential recruits and replacement transfers.

From a quick look, I believe roughly half of Samford's current roster came out of the transfer portal.

I'm assuming that if you live by the portal, you die by the portal. When you have a roster full of guys with no real connection to the school or to the coaching staff, there's really not much of a reason for them to stay.

I think we will look back over the years and realize that for our level, Furman's approach in both football and basketball to primarily recruit and develop high school players and supplement with the portal where needed will be the right answer.

ETSU gets two transfer commitments.

5'11" Jaylen Smith averaged 11.4 ppg, 5.7 assists, and 1.3 steals for North Florida this season. He hit 34.6% of his threes. His assists per game was #1 in the ASUN conference. He has two years of eligibility.

Blake Barkley is a 6'7" 220 freshman transfer from Northwestern. He had very little playing time at Northwestern this season but was a fairly highly recruited high schooler with almost two dozen offers including offers from A-10 and Mid-American conference schools. Northwestern was his only offer from a P4 school. He is from Morgantown, WV.

Interesting pickup for Wofford. Nils Machowski, 6'3" soph. PG is transferring in from UCF. He started 9 games for UCF this year and played in 31. Averaged about 4 ppg and 2 rpg while shooting 36.7% from three and hitting 81.5% from the FT line. Had a career high 15 vs. Oregon State in a UCF victory. Started the final seven games of the season and improved his numbers across the board in those games. Averaged almost 10 ppg and 42% of his threes over their last four games. Makes you wonder why he transferred. Looks like he was coming into his own in advance of next season.

Maybe he felt like he should have been playing more before that. My guess is he will definitely be starting for the Terriers from the beginning of the year.

Was the starting PG for the German U18 national team in 2022. His father played pro ball in Europe for 17 years.
