We have a lot of offers out there.

Dabo Swinney said earlier this year: "80% of the players in the portal aren't good enough to play for Clemson."

What percentage of the players in the portal aren't good enough to play for Furman?

I certainly do not think we are looking for warm bodies.

Furman appears to be primarily targeting graduates from high academic schools with solid football programs (Davidson, Wake, Holy Cross, Dartmouth, etc.)

I suspect our shift in mentality is that our coaches have realized that you cannot solely recruit and develop high school kids anymore. I think that's what we want to do, I'm just not sure we can afford to do it.

I'm curious which of the OL seem to be the likeliest to commit to FU?
- Tyriq with offers from Virginia Tech and Northwestern
- Jaydon - offers from West Georgia (with Brody) and Gardner-Webb
- Dallas - offers from UT Martin, ETSU, etc..

Any other OL offers out there not listed?

I don't think anyone really knows. Everything with the portal recruiting is much faster and quieter than the high school kids. From that list, Collins or Shirley seem most likely.

I think that's right. We are taking a warmer but similar approach to Dabo. You need to be able to play, you need to be able to do Furman academics, and you need to be a high character guy.

That all narrows our lens. I think we would take that OL from VMI in a heartbeat. But I think most of our others are going to be in that Wake, Davidson, Ivy vein.

I would not expect Maier, Robinson or Hicks to be back. I think Hinton and Chappel could come back. Not sure on Balliew.

Since Balliew committed to UWG, that feels pretty definite. If Maier and Robinson aren't likely to come back, then I doubt anyone will be back. Hinton and Chappel seem like they have enough offers at this point to expect that they won't be coming back. Those that have come back in the past (Blackshear, Yates, and Clark) did not have many public offers. Of course none of us know for sure.

If no one comes back AND no one else goes in, Furman will have had less portal turnover than most. Again, a lot can happen in 12 days. We'll see where everything shakes out in the spring.

Just following up on this. I just noticed that Maier is not on the 2025 roster. Given Chappel and Hinton are on the roster and Ingram and Holmes are not, I'm guessing there is something else going on here (either he graduated and is off the roster like Hicks and Robinson, or he's off for some other reason like Holmes and Ingram). Either way, feels very likely he's not coming back. We'll see how the coaches address it going forward.

Oh the demands...

Could you imagine Pyburn making a demand like that to Coach Sheridon (or Baker, Satterfield, Johnson, Hendrix, etc)?

1. His a** would be out the door with a big foot print on it.
2. His furnishings/clothes/belongings would be on the sidewalk in front of Manley or Geer Hall's before the sun set.
3. He would get a call from the Registrar that if he wanted to enroll in the Spring semester he would have to pay his own tuition, room, and board.

Good for Coach Napier. He did the right thing.

Man you need to get the MONEY while you can. Think about Marcus Lattimore at USC. NFL career coming and then nothing. He’s the prime example to me of where I get NIL. any superstar could get hurt. GET THE MONEY NOW. Screw the school. Take the money. As an adult with kids in college I so wish I coulda had say 300k NIL to a ROTH IRA. Say you put 200k in the Roth post tax. Thats TWO or THREE MILLION DOLLARS or far more TAX FREE when you retire.

I'm not against a player "getting the money" but the way Pyburn demanded this and demanded that rubbed me the wrong way. Did he get any money? Didn't Napier say no? Maybe he's in the transfer portal and has signed with a new team that will give him the money. I don't know.

FYI 200K-300K can certainly be invested but only 7K a year can go in a Roth IRA.

The sad truth is when many 18-22 year olds get big money they don't invest it. They spend it on stupid stuff like cars, jewelry, etc and wind up broke by age 23 if they don't make the pros. Some wind up broke by age 35 that do make the pros.

Maybe they come back but Maier would surprise me some. And that stinks. We could really use him. But items / issues . doubtful he comes back

Agree on all the specific demands. Playing every third down or whatever. That’s azz.

But I’m an old Furman accounting major. Heck, just put the NIL money in a checking account and live off of it while banking 23K a year from your salary in your 401K. It’s so easy. And put some in a ROTH IRA too. You would be set for life. If married use the NIL to fund your living while you and your spouse put 46k in 401k. In early 20s. SET. FOR. LIFE. Do they all do it ? NOT EVEN CLOSE. many are financial dummies as you say but I can’t help that. Heck, wish I could. Sad.

But they have an opportunity none of us did - I would have handled it correctly… I’m such a nerd I use to sit at my apartment pool in my early 20s reading “ Financial advice for those in their 20s”.
