Unfortunately Braylon Stewart did sign with Mercer. That one really sucks. I saw him following some Mercer coaches and was concerned.

At least FUbear will still get to cheer for him.
Well, he is a Capital City Homeboy, so FUBeAR kinda has to be a fan - the Newbauer to Stewart RaleighWood Connection in Maconga could be productive … until they both transfer to Akron or Florida Atlantic … or similar.

I haven't seen the final announcement, but a few thoughts on what's been reported thus far:

1. At RB we continue to target smaller, shiftier type players.

2. Consistent with prior years, we try to land at least three offensive linemen. We typically need a lot of bodies to fill those five spots and those are positions where development really matters long term.

3. Recent history suggests that we typically try to land one split receiver (bigger guy) and one slot receiver (a bit shorter quicker) each year. It looks like we got the slot type guy in James, but the split guy went another direction. Good news is we are not for want of split receivers.

4. No TE in the class to this point. That may seem reasonable with Chappell as a rising junior, Pryor, Ruckh, Burrell, Tormey, etc. all likely to factor in as well as a couple big bodied receivers that will line up in the slot.

5. No QB. That may suggest that the coaches expect all three guys to return next year (or at least two).

6. Picked up a couple of talented athletic "linebackers." We've done a lot of mixing and matching at that position with guys that are athletic enough to both play inside and outside (Achina, Chideo, etc.).

7. Maddox Dykeman is an interesting prospect. It's not often you see Furman bring in a 6'8 guy to play defense.

Not that it matters but former OL commit Eli Dorton signed with ETSU. So, couple of guys you can cheer extra hard against in the future when we play Mercer and ETSU ;)

All good observations. Couple of things...

The staff, to my knowledge, has yet to offer a QB this cycle. Followed several but no offers yet. It makes sense as we're supposed to have all 3 coming back. We'll see if that happens.

The LB commits in this class are interesting in that they do not follow the mold of guys like Dimaggio, Earl, and Herbert (6'2" to 6'4", 220-235 pounds). They are both around 6 feet and 210-220 pounds. I don't know if that's any type of shift in philosophy but just thought it was interesting that Earl/Herbert fit a mold and Ellison/Simmons fit a different mold.

Dykeman is an interesting prospect. I honestly think he's a guy who could play OT as well. He played opposite of a very good player 2 years ago so his numbers were better then than last year, but he does give Furman some size and length on the edge.

Another thing to remember is that Furman landed 4 players during the February signing day with 2 of them playing a lot of snaps this year in Coleman and Jones. There are still good players out there to sign in a few months so we may still see another couple of HS signees. Personally, I hope the coaches go find some portal guys to replace who we lose. Feels like we need a little help in a few spots that maybe aren't coming along as fast as we would have liked.

TE Portal Prospect from Davidson, maybe?

Here’s an OL prospect Coach FUBeAR would take a long look at …

* Anderson, SC native
* Began at Mercer and played a good bit. May have even started a few games or more. FUBeAR remembers him being solid with plenty of upside.
* Transferred to South Carolina, as a PWO, FUBeAR understands.
* FUBeAR, fall of ‘23, asked a Gamecock Coach FUBeAR know about him … “great kid” was his response.

Just might want a Grad degree that FU offers.

A few ideas on this.

We have a bunch of guys listed at ILB. I believe we only lose one to graduation (DiMaggio). With a couple of young linebackers ready to step in (Earl and Herbert, for instance), the need to fill in that spot may not have been acute.

I'm still wondering if we aren't going to see the SPUR position develop into more of a traditional outside linebacker. Furman seemed this year (some due to graduation and injuries) settle a rotation with a CB (often Javaris Jones) as a nickel corner and Amaah Achina as an outside linebacker depending on personnel.

Looking at Nick Simmons video, for instance, he looks like an Achina type - just an athletic linebacker that basically can play anywhere.

Bandit thought -

With Clark's departure and perhaps Maier's too, I wonder if we may see one of the athletic defensive linemen fill that role. Alabi and Dobbins both seem like guys that are going to be long, physical type players that could develop there.

Sure...he majored in this - "is a services management major" - at USC. FUBeAR doesn't know what that is either...

So...either Strategic Design...or one of the following 5 Furman Graduate Program offerings...most of which FUBeAR doesn't know what they are...

Advocacy & Equity Studies
Community-Engaged Medicine
Education
Master of Science in Chemistry
Innovation and Leadership

The lack of a graduate “business” degree hurts.
Innovation and Leadership starts to 'get at' bid-ness and FUBeAR believes there are some business-y things involved with that Strategic Design Masters.

Combining those with the things available via Furman's Hill Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, we can probably cobble together an attractive business-oriented Master's Program - particularly for these young folks that want to start their own businesses...which FUBeAR recently read is 50% of GenZ-ers...and not ALL of them just want to be "influencers." ... just most. :D

But a more traditional (accredited) MBA AND that Innovation / Entrepreneurship piece FU already has going...particularly with an IT / Technology Masters would be COOKIN' WIT GAS!!!
