As a lot of you guys know, I have become a huge fan of Coach Duane Vaughn.

So I was researching what his thoughts are on the rather modest outcomes to-date for this season, and came across this from the AFCA's "Inside The Headset":

One of the Coach Vaughn's advocacies is BiggerThanBall.com. You may find it interesting.

Glad to see someone appreciating Coach Vaughan despite our leaky D this season thus far. Last year he had the horses and he did a great job with them. This year, the horses are simply not there. Graduation, transfers, injuries, etc have decimated this team. Not his fault. He is doing his best with what he has and by the end of the season some of these kids who are experiencing college football for the first time, will be better because of his coaching. Poor coverage, missed assignments, terrible tackling will end and some studs will emerge. Perhaps even a win or two is in the making. The architect of one of the best defenses in Furman football history did not suddenly get dumb over the off season.

Vaughn is in his 13th year at Furman, and seems to consistently put a good defense on the field (minus this year, because we are so young). I assume he will leave for a HC position elsewhere any day now. Thoughts?

No. No no NO! We cannot lose Coach Vaughn. I read it somewhere, I dunno... Leviticus or the Mahabharata or somewhere: "Coach Vaughn shalt not leave Furman, forsaking all HC jobs everywhere even if its for a lot more money."

Further to the point, Coach Vaughn's spouse, Mrs. Vaughn, leads a dynamite cheering function at the games. It would seem peculiar if she's cheering on the Paladins when her husband is off coaching at Pullham State or somewhere. So no, Coach Vaughn leaving is a non-starter.

Who is looking for a HC any day now? An odd time of the year.

This has been the Year of The Non-Starter.

I'm simply proposing that we do not allow what is righteous, honorable, and uncorrupted (Coach Vaughn, a paragon of virtue) to be sullied by the vulgarity that exists at other football programs.

Oh, I know what you're thinking. "Duane Vaughn is a 6'2" 220 pound man-mountain that could sweep away any opposition. Look at his wing-span!" Yes, that is true, but put him in a filthy environment such as so-and-so State or Eastern whatever University and we no longer have the undesecrated icon that he is.

"Any day now" as in soon, not literally the next day.

Coach Vaughn will not leave Furman.

Thirteen years ago he strode on Furman's campus, walking to and fro upon it. The waters of Furman Lake parted as he waded into the mire, dipping his right hand in the e coli muck and pulled out a sword, a mighty blade, and held it aloft unto the Bell Tower. Spewing forth from Paris Mountain came a thunderclap of approval. Coach Vaughn slew ten thousand Candian geese with his mighty blade. And he did. The entrails of the slain geese confirmed the oracle: Coach Vaughn shalt be a Paladin.

One time Coach Vaughn inhaled a Furman swan into his lungs and blew it out his nose. It terribly injured the swan so he breastfed it back to health. Later we found out that if you put a phonograph needle on Coach Vaughn's left nipple and rotated his body around it played "Pet Sounds" from The Beach Boys. I wouldn't have believed it if I hadn't seen it; it was the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

Coach Vaughn sweats purple gatoraid and can high jump the goal post while holding any faculty member currently on staff.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
