Control what you can. So the SoCon is weak this year...out of our control. Furman only needs to worry about Furman. Get better at running the football now. That we can control.
Charleston Southern, only one win this year and it was in Greenville...
This year we have contributed to that 'weak' SoCon characterization...

In a strong league we would be toast, but we have a shot in this weak SoCon

Could be the smallest crowd we have seen with the current situation and students gone on fall break of all things.
Nope.

wow, that's crazy - SC State usually brings a decent crowd. Heavy rain?
It was a night game and yes it was pourng.

I was scrolling through the roster today and I thought I would put on "paper" the number of guys who we lost before or during the season for multiple games (or the whole season) to this point:

WR Josh Harris (starter)
TE Josh Burrell (starter)
DB AK Burrell (starter)
WR Santino Varvel
DB Jalen Tate (2 deep)
Spur Justin Hartwell (starter)
Ban Alex Maier (2 deep - would play a lot)
RB Jayquan Smith (2 deep - still out from last year)
LB Raleigh Herbert (2 deep - missed a couple of games)
DE David Alabi (contributor)
DT Bryce Stanfield (starter)

We were down at least 3 starters before the season even started (Stanfield, Hartwell, Burrell), and since then we have lost at least 2 more for multiple games (Burrell and Harris). Add to that 3 guys from the two deep (Maier, Smith, Tate) and that's a lot of guys we were counting on playing a lot of snaps who aren't going to play a ton or at all for us this year. Not to mention we have a true freshman QB starting now as well. This team was already going to be young, but it's even younger than we all expected.

I looked at the ETSU and UTC 2 deeps from last week. ETSU has 0 freshmen starting and UTC has 2. Both their 2 deeps have remained relatively unchanged since the start of the year. Not sure how the rest of the 2 deeps look, but I would be shocked if Furman didn't have the most or second most number of true or RS freshmen on the 2 deeps.

Someone else mentioned it earlier this week I think, but this team has already faced it's fair share of adversity and is having to grow up on the job very quickly.

UTC will certainly be a challenge. I look forward to seeing if this team will be able to rise to meet the challenge.
FUWolfpacker, THANKS for the listing !! Thank you !

Of course a lot of people argued pre-season that we would be fine playing our young guys? Picking us to win 9 or 10 games this year. That goal is already gone. I was probably too Positive saying we would win 8 games. Don't see that happening now... Some said these new guys are "Ready to go" ! " So what if we are even younger - the recruiting should account for this and we should be fine."

I don't personally buy into that theory... And it appears I was correct (Unfortunately). I take no joy in that. I wouldn't be on this gopaladins board so much if I wasn't a HUGE FAN !! But EXPERIENCE AND STRENGTH (gained by multiple years of weightlifting) is the KEY. The KEY. Especially on the OL.

As you are implying FUWolfpacker, you just can't beat having experience. Or you are at least saying these other teams are older ... far less FR etc.

Heck, Flagman - a great guy !!!, nothing personal here - specifically asked why we were pre-season ranked below UTC when we beat them twice last year ! I replied.. "because they return most of their team and their QB and etc". Last year was last year. It is not relevant to this year at all EXCEPT for returning players and coaches.

Look I hope we beat UTC !!! I REALLY DO. But overall they are probably a better team - we can beat them but I think I read they have been installed as a 6 point favorite AT Furman !

Hope Flagman is right :D - Go Furman beat UTC !

FUWolfpacker, I REALLY appreciate your listing. Sadly, we may be adding one to the list. the DB number 8 - MOSON. Not sure his status after the last play at Citadel? His arm was in a sling. Landed on shoulder.

What is interesting is many of the lost players (injury etc) are on defense which was good last week or as WR/TE which was great. NONE are on our OL? ? Which has been struggling the most of all units. Strange little tidbit.

Probably 2 more starters out after Citadel. We are approaching 1/5 of all scholarship players being lost for the season.

It’s a rolling calamity.

This group though is seemingly coming together and the victory last week might just have been the sauce to get them rolling. Just win by 1 point is all we need. Doesn't have to be pretty.

Ugh.

Assume number 8 and 40? Or someone different. 40 didn’t look too bad - as in a week or two.

And to YOUTH. As our game notes say.. we concluded last year with a combined FIVE HUNDRED FORTY ONE STARTS. This year began with ONE HUNDRED FORTY ONE STARTS but ……. THIRTY FIVE STARTS belonged to one Harris, Joshua !!! Think about that. One third of our starts may be gone if he doesn’t return. Crazy

This reminds me of the year Wofford lost about 9 starters. 2016? And lost numerous games.

Could just be one of those seasons.

On a positive note, if we are down a lot of bodies, it may be better that it came in a "reloading" year as opposed to a title run year.

Not glass half empty. I figured before the season it would be a good opportunity to watch a lot of the future of the program. Now we're just going to see more than we probably expected to.

Of course no shame in needing to "rebuild"...
Its a good year to be in the weak SoCon with a rebuilding team where somehow even that gives you a shot...
