UNCG's starters weren't the problem.
It was the two 6-9 guys (Hamilton and Hunter) off the bench that combined for 24 points that kicked our butt. How did that compare with our big guys off the bench ? Here's a hint. Jalen never took off his sweats. They also had a 6-3 guard (Massa) who played 19 minutes.
Hunter is a 6'4" wing/small forward, not a big man. Hamilton played well. Massey was a starter before being replaced by Miller against Furman, and he only scored 2 points in those 19 minutes. UNCG's bench under performed their starters. They played over 33% of the minutes but scored less than 30% of the points. Furman's bench played only about 12% of the minutes but scored over 25% of our points.
Our starters were outplayed as a group by UNCG. Lyons and Hunter had eight turnovers between them and shot 36%. The Spartans guards hit over 46% with fewer turnovers. Miller, who has hit less than 30% of his three pointers in his career, hit 4 against us and had a career high 25 points. Mounce and Gurley had 3 rebounds total. They shot the ball well but only took 8 shots between them.
BTW, VMI's close game at Kentucky was because they hit 19 three point shots - the most any team has ever made against Kentucky. VMI hit 50% from behind the arc. Bubba Parham, 5'11" guard for VMI, had 35 points and hit 10-16 threes. Kentucky utterly dominated VMI inside with a 42-14 scoring advantage in the paint and a 43-22 rebound advantage. I didn't see that game but my guess is Creammer got a few layups because Kentucky was more concerned about VMI's three point shooting.
