HUGE issue going forward ! New scholarship limits increase

really surprised this hasn’t been posted. It’s on almost all the FBS boards

Among enormous scholarship changes - baseball from 11.7 scholarships now to THIRTY FOUR…

focus first on football. FBS was limited to 85. Now they are looking to go to 105. That’s horrific for FCS. we often get guys who can’t get a P5 offer (even if they deserve one) or only one P5 offer. Now the big schools that can afford 105 full scholarships will take 105 guys instead of 85 and … pretty clearly rendering FCS a lesser talented game. And FBS doesn’t have to offer the full 105. The lesser budgets of a G5 can still offer 95 or 100. In total it appears at least ONE THOUSAND more players nationwide will get FBS scholarships!

I just don’t see how that doesn’t take even more of the best talent from FCS

1-Transfer portal. No one year wait to transfer - already losing our DBs and Pegues etc
2-HUGE NIL
3- And now this too? 20 more full rides at any FBS that can afford it.. and 10-20 more scholarships at most any g5

Now, it may affect all of FCS equally. Actually it may even the landscape and create FCS parity. SDSU and NDSU will lose the Carson Wentz and NFL guys after year 2 to big SEC NIL…. Or may not get them at all as Wisconsin will now have 20 more scholarships to offer.

But the overall FCS product will definitely diminish in quality. Especially the top teams. Sure, if you are number 110 ranked in FCS then NIL and more FBS scholarships may not hit you but if you are looking for the Jerome Feltons well this is gonna be tough. I think I recall we got him in part because Vandy didn’t have a scholarship left? Regardless. Not to focus on him. This is Yet another hit to REAL STUDENT ATHLETES at FCS.

Heck. This eliminates parity in FBS. Bama etc will just have room to get more 5 star athletes that used to may have gone elsewhere…

Thoughts? It Starts next year. . Clemson, USC, APP, GTech, wake, Duke, UNC, Charlotte, Coastal, Georgia State, Georgia Southern are all gonna take 20 more guys off the table. First many of these schools didn’t have football 25 years ago. Now - as an example - freakin App State is going from 63 … to 85 … to maybe 105 scholarship players ! Same with Georgia Southern etc. 63. Now 85. Now 105 if they can afford it. I bet they can afford 95 at least.

AND … AND this new ruling also allows FBS to start partial scholarships for the first time. Bad for us. It used to be FBS had to offer up to 85 but they had to be full scholarships or nothing …. Now say App State can’t quite fund 100 full rides. If they still had to stick to full rides only they might take 95 guys. Now they have the flexibility to offer 90 full schedules and 10 half scholarships or find ways to get guys, especially with a state tuition and a half scholarship…

I just love FCS and they keep killing it. Mother F….

Thoughts? Am I seeing this wrong? The only silver lining I see is it could really hit NDSU and SDSU hard …. Though that’s really the transfer portal and big NIL after a guy shows out up there

Good point GF. I heard this the other day but didn’t put 2 and 2 together like you did. Most likely ends any FCS over FBS upsets which could be an underlying reason for this. I guess one thing that could be a plus is it will just create that many more dissatisfied players transferring. Like they said on radio no one needs 105 scholarships.

I’ve heard back when there were no limits Bama used to take players just to keep other teams from getting them. From my older relatives. That’s why they liked the 85 limit.

Johnny Majors has turned the University of Pittsburgh football team into a winner so quickly that opponents are restless and suspicious.

The young Tennesseean, hired as Pitt's coach last Dec. 19, dropped into Western Pennsylvania like a tornado and swept up more than his share of available young football players. He used the same method in the previous five years to turn Iowa State from a loser to a bowl team.

Majors called on his contacts at junior colleges and was able to induce “a halfdozen J.C. players to transfer to Pitt.” He and his staff recruited successfully through Minnesota, Ohio, Michigan, Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, New York, Virginia and Illinois.

Pittsburgh gave out “between 65 and 70 football scholarships,” according to Majors. His biggest coup was landing Tony Dorsett, the best back in Pennsylvania high schools in 1972.

65-70 … IN 1 RECRUITING CLASS!

…and they won the National Championship in 1976 when that class was Sr’s.

105 limit was 1st implemented in 1973. Title IX was the reason, said some. Johnny Majors was the real reason, said others.

Currently, a lot of FBS teams have 85 scholarship players, but then will show up to camp with 120-130 players (mostly walk-ons). As I understand it, the rules would now allow for more scholarship players, but then eliminate the ability to carry those extra 15-20 players.

Also, it's worth remembering that there were a great deal fewer D1 football programs 20+ years ago than there are now. Furman is recruiting against teams today that didn't even exist 20 years ago for players.

Furman will adjust. Like they always have.

Yes the FBS roster limit will be 105 so of course that is way too many but it should reduce the overall number of players at every FBS school. Furman currently has 119 players on their roster. The effect on title 9 is yet to be determined but that is over 40 more mens scholarships counting baseball. Of course schools do not have to give that many. It will come down to like it always has, does a kid want to go to a school and never or hardly ever play or go somewhere he is more likely to play. Then again will a school be willing to spend money on #86-105 that most likely never play? My thought is the extra schollies will go to the portal and not high school kids.

HB88, YES. You are correct. FBS will now - for the first time ever - be able to offer partial scholarships to football players.

Used to only FCS could offer partial. Now FBS can too starting next year

Yes and No. FBS is better than FCS in part because of DEPTH. Especially on OL and DL. Well this just allows them to find a few more OL and DL that are serviceable or a diamond in the rough

It's all evolving. I wouldn't be surprised to see JV teams return or something like the military academies do with prep school teams.

Dabo is correct. The NFL has a 53 man active roster. No needs 85 players much less 105. Just more peeps will be unhappy and thus transfer.
