Looks like he played in 21 games in his FSU career and 0 catches.
If memory serves, Mason Pline had maybe only two catches his last season at D2 Ferris State. They almost never threw to him.

He came to Furman and became one of the best TEs in the FCS and an incredibly dangerous receiver.

Burrell has two years to play - his offer list out of HS was impressive.
Had several FBS offers and was set to visit SC.
He's about the size of Ryan Miller - a huge pickup!

I guess that Furman (Nick Verna) having tight ends sign with NFL teams back to back makes Furman attractive to a player looking to play in the pros.
Just reading up on him a bit.

1. Burrell was ranked as the #4/5 player in South Carolina coming out of high school.

2. He's on the All-ACC academic team, which means he's obviously good in the classroom.

3. Furman has now established a track record of putting TEs in NFL camps.

4. Furman heavily features the hybrid TE in their offense. Pline had 32 receptions in his one season, which I think is 30+ more than he had at Ferris State in total. Miller had 72 receptions in 2022. Furman's offense feeds the heck out of this position.

5. I don't know this, but I'm wagering Furman is going to air it out more with our current QB room than we did with Tyler Huff, who was more of a runner. The three guys we have at QB can all spin it.

6. I suspect he's going to slot right into the rotation. Furman has typically only taken grad transfers that are going to see the field immediately.

So, he's going to a school that is already on NFL team's radars for producing talent at the position, he's going to play immediately, and he's going to get a lot of throws his direction.

It makes sense that he will likely end up in the Ryan Miller-type role. Furman has Chappell, who played a bunch as a freshman, that seems to be more of that in-line TE. Burrell, I guess, will be destined for that hybrid TE/WR role that Miller was so effective in.

From what I'm reading, he and Miller are similar physical profiles - 6'2 220 ish with 4.5-4.6 speed. Furman's going to have a lot of weapons at pass catcher.

I'm surprised that some of you have the impression that the coaches aren't active in the portal. Almost every transfer the past two seasons has come to Furman and have made considerable contributions even as depth players. I also don't recall any having a bunch of hype. The coaches have been very selective with who they target and how they can help the program. That's their model and it has been working. And...true to how Furman announces things, it's always after all the official business is completed. Patience grasshoppers!!

Maybe a tad faster….

There are some interviews where FSU had tried to move him to RB.

I'm guessing that if he was a top 5 state prospect, went to FSU, and played WR and RB, he can probably run.
Furman should get another speed bump this season from several incoming offensive players;
Gavin Hall RB sub 4.5
Devin Hester, Jr 100m 11.07

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
