Of course FUBeAR will be stowing away on the Team plane and strapping up on Friday night in Missoula, so he won’t be attending, but…

The Atlanta FAN (Furman Alumni Network) Group has put together an Atlanta Area Watch Party for those of us in the area…or who would like to come to the area.

Fairway Social in Alpharetta, GA is going to host. The owner is a Furman Alum and we held a couple of Hoops Watch Parties here in March that were a lot of fun.

Their hours show they close at 12 midnight, but they have committed to remaining open for us until the game is over.

Kickoff is at 9 PM ET and they’ll be open, so anyone can arrive as early as you would like. It’s a fun place even before Football kicks off. Website / Address below.

FUBeAR will answer any questions you might have…until he sneaks into the rolling drink cart before it’s loaded on the plane. Prolly will start a separate thread to call attention to it…

From the great NW…Greetings

Welcome to all who make the trip. Many try to find ways to find fault or discredit people they do not know or are not familiar with. Personally I try to find a way to focus on what we have in common.
One obvious thing is FB. Also, we are fans of FCS schools. A couple years ago I went to Seattle and watched the Griz beat the UW Huskies. Never head as much hatred towards a program and coaching as their fans when the Griz beat them. It is always funny when a FCS school hands the big boys a little humble pie.
Another thing where there is familiarity is Justin Roper. He attended UM after Oregon and played QB for us and he and Bobby Hauck have been friends since. Roper played in the Oregon offense which had some similarities to Boise back then. The high powered offense was always thought of as a passing offense, but the foundation was a diverse run game. Back in the day Bobby ball was old fashion run heavy and rely on defense to keep things close and win by 1 point at the end. A few years into Bobby’s second stint here Pease is our current OC. Who by chance was in Boise about the time Roper was in college. Pease was OC in Montana in the 90’s and OC in Boise and a few years ago the HC of the Florida Gators. He returned to UM where he played and got started in coaching under Reed. Now he is our current OC to face Roper who has had familiarity with Hauck and Pease. Thus in a recent press conference the UD HC said he sees familiarity with the Griz and UD…it only makes sense. Another coaching change for UM this year is Bobby’s brother is coaching on the defensive side. The Haucks are from a third or fourth generation of FB coaching in their family, it is in their DNA. His brother played in the NFL and coached for the Eagles. UM has been blessed with decades worth of experience in the coaching staff, but there is the old school way of teaching discipline and they use local to the state of Montana players as the core players. The Montana kids may not be the greatest athletes on the team but are the heart and tone setters for the rest that come from other states. As with UD the HC and Roper have coached for a bit and have crossed paths with most of the UM coaches or coached against them at times. So the two programs are probably more similar than the fans who are not familiar with the other program think.

It is a crazy time in college FB UD and UM are shining examples of doing things the right way and both have student athletes who excel in FB and their education.

A bit of a breakdown on actual scheme of the Griz offense and defense for those who may be interested. The D is a 3-3-5 and as one local said a 1-5-5 with what has been posted here, Gubner or the Gub is the engine and a few years ago lead the team with 3 INTs although a DL player. UM is LB U they pump out LBs every year who are top in the FCS year in and year out. Currently there are 6 who are plug and play so they are deep and can play lights out whoever is on the field. The DBs are big, long and fast, some are as big as most teams LBs. There are specialists at the LB position who can be inserted for extra speed if needed who are not part of the first 6. The bigger LBs who play ILB are thumpers so they enforce the run primarily. The DBs will also tackle.
The offense all starts with McDowell who is a great kid who has bounced around and found a home in MT. Many locals dismissed his ability to throw…that is a mistake. My father says he runs like a Giraffe. LOL His long legs don’t seem to be moving fast as the yards go by fast with his long strides. Gillman was a great get and young who runs like a vet. RB depth is at least 3 deep as per solid backs. The WR group is diverse and more speed than we have had in a bit.

The game has to be played and anyone can win. It will be a great night for FB on Friday with two quality well coached teams. We as fans of UM respect FB and our opponents and their fans. There are a few idiots, but for the most part many blue collar fans who enjoy what we have. We have fans that travel 400-600 mile weekly to attend games in Missoula…it is a small university, but unique this is the biggest show in town.

Once again thanks for those making the trip and if any on the forum want any info or have questions ask away. This is a great way to get to know others on the other side of the country and share something we love and have in common. It doesn’t have to be apes beating their chest although I enjoy that at times also.

Many are missing out on the value of the FCS and what it offers.

Let them run their wide splits, our quickness will negate it.

Key to that is our 0 tech and 5 tech guys need to be gap sound, anchor the middle and set the edge. Everyone needs to focus on gap control but its crucial at those two spots DT and DE. Let the LBs spill and seal up the running lanes, then make sound one on one tackles. We cannot let them play with leverage and space Need to jam up the A and B gaps mix it up between safety and LB so they cannot throw us out of that. It only takes one player free in the backfield to blow up protection and make it a scramble drill. Speed on the DL kills wide splits. Line up our corners and jam receivers at the line while pressuring with speed at DL will throw timing off and make a QB who does not seems to process quickly make forced errors.
I agree with you. I found this play against Wofford that may be a good indicator of what we'll see Furman try to do.

Man coverage across the board. Sirod Cook, at NG, looks to line head up on guard and ends up crossing the center. Braden Gilby blitzes the A gap. Puts center in position where he can't block both guys.

Jeremiah Jackson forces a double team. Evan Dimaggio brings a weak side blitz. OT can't recover.

With those wide splits, Montana is going to be trying to win a lot of one on one matchups with their offensive line. I think we'll see Furman try to use man coverage a good bit and try to mix up their protection with our quick interior linemen. Best I can tell, the way to stop their offense is to disrupt #17.

Is there really a feeling about Montana having wide OL splits? I have watched FB for decades and this is the most I have seen discussed about wide OL splits.

The focus on #17 is correct, this point in the season the teams with the best overall team play and QB play advance.

One problem with any blitz is multiple types of screens. Any over aggression can play right into a solid offense’s hand.

UD seems to be able to pressure without much blitzing.

My personal observation is UD looks solid on defense and more willing to play conservative offense. UD fans may be surprised physical the Griz defense is. Both defenses are the strength of each team IMHO…I would’t put much weight on size and weight on paper and more weight on production of each player. With two experienced coaching staffs they will both be looking to exploit a weakness. Friday will show which one was effective in finding the best matchups.

One mistake with a few Delaware players is they came into the pregame giving the crowd the business. They may have had better results focusing on their responsibilities and personal play over trying to make a statement with antics towards the crowd.

UD HC and the players I have seen, seem to be more about executing their play than being too emotionally driven. I complement that. The attempt to play the over looked underdog by the HC is a smart approach. The Griz coaches are not overlooking UD or underestimating their talent.

Such a painful play in the Wofford game...we inadvertently took away the go-ahead touchdown from ourselves.

Dozzer....

We're gonna assume "Dozzer" isn't Montanan for "Drunkard"....and we're gonna assume, based on the near-lucidity of most of your comments, that you do know and are capable of using the alphabet.

So ... just to assist any future posts you might make here....

1) Montana played "UD," a common abbreviation for the University of Delaware, last week

2) Montana is playing "FU," a common abbreviation for Furman University, among other things, this week

Hope that is helpful for you.

I don't think you'll see pre-game theatrics from Furman. Furman is one of, if not the, most experienced teams in the post-season. They'll be about business.

From what I've seen this year, Furman will be better than Delaware. UD finished 8-3 in the CAA, but as it happens in that conference, they didn't play Albany. They didn't play Richmond. They didn't play William & Mary. They didn't play Rhode Island.

In my view, UD had an artificially inflated record helped in part by their conference schedule, which had them avoiding half the good teams in their own conference. They were then exposed by the Patriot League champs in the first round and finished off by the first really good team they had faced in months.

In Furman, Montana will see a bigger more physical and experienced team than they saw with Delaware.

I think you'll see a lot of similarities in Furman and Montana, especially on defense. Furman is unique in that nearly the entire defensive unit "two platoons." From drive to drive, Furman will have almost an entirely new cast on the field. There's no drop off in production, and for that reason, they are a hard group to wear down. Like Montana, the linebackers are old school thumpers.

Furman's defense does three things really well: (1) stop the run, (2) pressure the QB, and (3) force turnovers. They'll need to do all three Friday.

As I've noted, I think the game will come down to which team can run the ball and which team can hit on a few of their shots over the course of the game.

Depends what you’re looking for. Kettlehouse, Draughtworks, Bayern and imagination are my favorite breweries. Bayern has good German-style food too. FYI most breweries in Montana don’t have food and close at 8 pm.

Gild and The Camino are good for tacos. Top Hat is a good diverse menu. Biga is the spot for pizza. Missoula club for warm beer and cold burgers. Best place to run into Griz fans probably. For more upscale spots try Finn, Brasserie port rouge or Florabella.

For lunch Tagliare and market on front are great sandwich spots. Market on front has good breakfast burritos too. Lots of good local bakeries too.

For parking I suggest taking advantage of the shuttle. There are two parking garages downtown and the shuttle picks up at both of them every 15 minutes or so. Drop off is close to the stadium.

Welcome, travel safe and enjoy Missoula!

I don’t know what today’s schedule is like for the team. I realize they are students and probably have class today. I think I even heard CCH saying the presser they have finals this week? BUT since it was in the 20s this morning in Greenville I’m curious if they were tempted to get a morning walk through in today to experience throwing/catching/kicking that cold ball.

Not a bad idea - it would just be a refresher though - they're out there in Jan/Feb going full tilt in 20 degree weather all "Spring" practice.

FUBeAR ain't worried about anything 20 and above. Colder / Snowier / Sleetier / Frozen Rainier is a different story.

Few other observations:

- The QB is a good athlete, but I agree that they are not asking him to really process the defense. Their passing game looks single read - he's usually staring directly at the guy he's throwing to.

- The QB can definitely run, but does not strike me as particularly "creative." The passing game is usually a single read. Most of the runs are designed. I don't see a lot of checking off receivers and getting on the move.

- The run game is sort of a numbers contest. They run a spread, but a lot of the run game is "counting hats" in the box. With the wide splits, the QB/RB are going to be going where there are fewer defenders, whether inside or outside.

- Sometimes you'll see some read plays, but not really zone stuff. The QB carries out a lot of fakes, but I don't see where he's really reading any defender. I think whether he keeps or hands it off is probably by design. I've seen a few option plays where they are running a toss sweep type play instead of a true pitch option.

- I agree with the earlier comment that our "spill" defenders (linebackers, SPURs, safeties) have to be tackling machines. Their receivers block well, but there's usually a lot of opportunities for that second wave of defenders to make tackles in the alley. We've generally been good this year against teams that try to run around us. Our DBs are really good at shoving their blockers backwards and our second wave has been really strong in tackling all season. Our DBs have to force them to run sideways and buy time for our linebackers to get there.

- You can see over and over that Montana's offense hurts you when you don't get their guy to the ground. From the games I've watched, I think we're a better tackling team than anyone they've faced.

- I know their podcast guys think Furman is slow, but remember we went on the road against UIW last season against what was the quickest/fastest offense I have seen since App State in the mid 2000s and did just fine. I don't think they're going to outrun us. We've seen quick receivers and backs all season. I don't think all those jump cuts and second chance yards they pick up are going to be as widely available against our defense.

At 1AM this morning(Thursday) it is 41 degrees in Missoula and 34 in Greenville. Go figure. Friday high in Missoula is 36, its reversed in Greenville 63. Gametime temp 32.

Listening to Coach Hendrix's comments, it seemed pretty apparent to me that the team has trained over the last year to play a road game in Montana/Dakotas. They knew it was likely at some point and have prepared for it.

A send-off from Paladin Stadium was scheduled for 10:00am today.
