Interesting article. I wonder if any FCS programs have made this kid an offer...it only mentions interest (or lack thereof) from FBS schools. He seems like the prototypical Furman/ Wofford/Citadel/Kennesaw FB.

I may be misreading, but it says he is a Class of 2020 (next season, not this season).

Sure, not a lot of teams are looking for Fullbacks, but he'd do well to spend some summer camps at schools that run an offense that features the position.

Well, of the likes on that tweet, only one person qualifies as a defensive back from Alabama.

In a move that was somewhat unsurprising, LB Josh Slay decommits from FU (per his Twitter feed)....

Speculating, but I think this is the second linebacker to decommit out of that slot. I believe Slay wasn't offered until Veneziale decommitted.

Twitter at least suggests that Slay may be getting looks from bigger programs. Too bad to lose out on a good player, but if he doesn't want to be at Furman, it's best that he choose somewhere else to be.

As PaulC said, we had to see THIS COMING. when he didn't sign in December I said I'd be surprised if he came at all. When kids ask for extra time after being committed for a while it's Not good

We just can't keep the LBs - we recruit awesome ones and then ....dam we lose half.
McKoy. Great
Ellis transfers out as a superstar Rice award candidate
Hope AWESOME !!!
**. This year Veneiziale (sp.?) decommits
**. This year Slay decommits too

Q- Were Veneziale AND Slay for the same position?? ILB or OLB. Or were they different types of LBs?

Well, that's probably an exaggeration. There are a number of reasons a player decides to commit and then decommit. What you don't see, for instance, is the University publicly announcing what it does on its end. So, most of the time you have no idea whether this was a player decision, school decision, or some combination of both.

Hard to know what position Furman had in mind. Staggs' defense essentially runs three different types of linebacker - ILB (weakside/middle) are going to be your bulkier type players responsible for the inside game. We have some depth there with McKoy, Perryman, Voyles, Gilby, Hackett, etc.

Furman also runs a "Spur" position, which is a hybrid safety/OLB. Again, there's depth there with Willis, Porter, Wilkins, etc.

I would think that the biggest concern recruiting-wise is the "Bandit" position, our hybrid OLB/Pass Rusher. Behind Adrian Hope, there is really doesn't seem to be any depth at all.

It is too early to speculate where the new signees will play. Jalen Miller played a good bit of safety in high school, but is a bit bulkier as a freshman that some of those guys currently playing the Spur position. Bryce McCormick has not been shown to commit to a position either yet, but at his size (6'2 218) and athleticism, you could peg him for that pass rush role as well. If Furman really wants McCormick at TE, you also have Dillon Vann who moved to the other side of the line last year, but came to Furman as a OLB. Donovan Perryman is another player that spent time as an OLB before moving inside - a position he is suited for, but is also a place we have more depth.

Remember, Elijah McKoy was a high school cornerback, so there's really no guessing how the coaching staff may try to move guys around. I expect we will keep pushing for more linebackers, though, with some pass rush skills.

Jalen Miller stated in several interviews - that he was a perfect fit for the Furman defense <SPUR>
He's also going to be an early enroll. Miller is bulky 5-11 200 - he plays bigger. Miller was injured this year, missed most of the season but came back towards the end of the regular season and led Byrnes to the State Championship game. As Jackal said Miller appears to be going into a talented SPUR group. I still think Porter now listed as 6-2 225 will be moved out of the SPUR position. Porter is very athletic - it wouldn't surprise me to see him moved to ILB or Bandit.

Jack Barton is another interesting incoming player Barton is 6-4 220 is he a pure DE or could he move to Bandit? He's another very athletic player.

Also, think Jackal has it right concerning Byrce McCormick - another big pickup. Does he play LB or TE? Byrce would I believe excel at either position. CPA played a four-linebacker scheme —— McCormick with Kane Patterson (Clemson) played inside.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
