Such a great opportunity this weekend.

Furman can get a big conference road win. They can also essentially eliminate Samford from the SoCon title race and probably the postseason as well.
Samford has virtually no chance at the SoCon title. Even if they win Saturday, both UTC and WCU would have to end up with 3 SoCon losses and even if that happened they would have to lose to FU which means FU would have only one loss even that loss being to SU. Mathematically they have a chance but it woukd take some big upsets, not just one. They have a little better chance nationally but not much. They are currentky 35th n the stats poll and not in the top 40 in the FCS coaches poll.

A number of SoCon teams have won or shared a title with a 6-2 record, including Furman's last title in 2018.

Thats pretty much impossible for SU this year. They would have to run the table and WCU would have to lose 2 games, and both Furman and Chattanooga would have to lose another game. That pretty much can’t happen because FU would have to beat WCU and then the UTC/FU winner would still only have one loss. Like I said Sammy is done as far as the SoCon race is concerned.

There are a number of scenarios as of right now where it's possible.

Long story short, Furman can end that story this afternoon.

Samford wins-out: 6-2/8-3 with wins over ranked Furman and then probably 2 more ranked teams (Mercer and UT-M) - probably in playoffs with 3 big wins
Mercer only has above loss to Samford: 6-2/8-3 - biggest win would be against UTC and WCU - bubble team because not ranked now
FU loses to Samford and UTC: 6-2/8-3 with biggest wins being WCU and Mercer - probably in because you are ranked so high now
WCU loses to FU and Mercer: 6-2/8-3 with biggest wins being against Samford and UTC - probably bubble but might be ok because of current rank

Improbable that all plays out, but it isn't totally crazy to think it could. There are also similar scenarios that it could be UTC at either 7-1 or 6-2. So things are far from being determined in the SOCON at this stage.

The Paladins could change much of that narrative today. Mercer vs UTC is also a game with future playoff implications/complications at stake. Lots of football still to be played.

There is no question that Furman was the better team last year. Samford got all the breaks including the worst call in the history of refereed games. That was last year. I hope that Furman will be more motivated and disciplined in this years game than they have shown in most games thus season. A repeat of last week’s effort will not fly against a better opponent.

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
