Furman along with every other Socon member voted less than a year ago to double the exit fee to $ 2 million with proper notice. We aren’t going to another conference.
We will soon enough ;)

All you guys have to do is open your ears and hear what JD says, we want to be in a multi-bid basketball league

That is not the SoCon

That is however the A10

Once we get the Timmons project finished we can start making our pitch to the A10

Time to raise the program prestige to another level!
I disagree with hoopla. Perhaps JD’s promise or suggestion about being in a multi-team league means the following. We are going to position Furman to be good enough in the regular season in basketball while a SoCon member that we are going to get a bid a lot of years whether we are SoCon Tourney champs or not.
In any case, I do not see us changing conferences unless it is to some new or realigned conference in which our travel costs (time and money) do not increase significantly. Yet, we may have to do some significant men’s basketball travel OOC so we can go to whatever big names will play us in November and December so we can have the opportunity to beat them.

You're dead wrong, he's talking about being in a multi-bid league, SoCon has never been that before ever and does not look like it will ever. He's clearly talking about Furman getting into a more prestigious basketball league that has a history of being a multi-bid league.

When A10 adds new teams like Furman, Belmont, Charleston, to go along with what is already a strong A10 with Richmond, VCU and Davidson to replace a few that may go Big East like UMass ect., its going to be the perfect basketball conference for Furman to be in, no doubt.

This is obviously a long term vision of making Furman basketball big time ;)

You seemingly ignore those “drivabilty/Carbon footprint” arguments.
In an A10 that would have added CofC & Belmont & Furman, all the schools still would be farther away than the current SoCon school with exception of Davidson, CofC, possibly Belmont(?), possibly Richmond & VCU. Swapping all 9 somewhat drivable conference opponents in SoCon for only 3 to 5 somewhat drivable in A10 and NUMEROUS distant other schools in A10 is what makes this seem less desirable.

Davidson spends a lot less money on football than Furman does. Therefore Davidson’s athletics expenditures can be more easily directed to basketball travel to far-flung A10 opponents than would be the case with Furman. Davidson has twice the endowment of Furman. Davidson has fewer students than Furman. In summary, I’m not sure it is true to just say “if Davidson can so can we and we can be just as big as Davidson in basketball very soon”.

Fewer students and an endowment double the size of ours means they can give bigger and more scholarships, and some of those scholarships are to students who happen to be good athletes. And part of the endowment undoubted is devoted to support for athletics in numerous ways. We can do it just because Davidson can? If that is true, great, let’s do it. I’ll believe it when there is more evidence to support that theory.

I am not talking about endowment, my question how does having less students help a school at all with achieving more in college basketball?

Not really arguing this A10/SoCon non-issue. FU Hoopla can have fun tilting at windmills until the cows come home and see if he can find any Message Board Sancho’s to join the cause…but…FUBeAR will try to add some clarity to a piece of the discussion…hopefully…

“Fewer students and an endowment double the size of ours means they can give bigger and more scholarships…”

Only looking at Men’s Basketball as that is the ‘real’ topic here - FUBeAR is almost 100% certain that Davidson is a full scholarship D1 basketball school, as is Furman. Both schools give the NCAA limit of 13 full basketball scholarships, which includes ONLY all college costs, including tuition, housing, books, fees, etc…and a stipend related to “full cost of attendance” (outside the scope of this post to elaborate too much around that topic).

Unless FUBeAR is mistaken (which he highly doubts), the only difference in the $ value of a basketball scholarship at Furman and one at Davidson is the difference in the cost of tuition, etc. at the respective schools. A Miller Light in a swanky downtown Greenville hotel costs X. That same Miller Light costs X-y at The Stump Tavern, but it is still a Miller Light. Right? There could also be some differences in the “Cost of Attendance” stipend based upon the mechanics of those calculations, but not really significant $’s. Davidson cannot give “bigger” basketball scholarships to its Recruited Basketball Players than Furman and they dang sure cannot give “more.” Ahh…just thought of 1 other exception, actually … it’s possible that Davidson could provide more academic money to walk-on Basketball Players, but if Coaches are doing their job in Recruiting, walk-on’s are rarely significant gameday contributors to any D1 College Hoops programs. The difference they might provide as “Scout Team” opponents in practice because they rec’d $5k more in merit money are doubtlessly negligible.

“…some of those scholarships are to students who happen to be good athletes.”

Neither Davidson nor Furman are recruiting “students who happen to be good athletes” as Scholarship Players for their Basketball programs. They are recruiting OUTSTANDING Basketball Players who have the necessary requirements to be admitted to their schools and, hopefully, the ability and maturity to stay eligible to play Basketball and, hopefully, be good citizens within the school’s community, and hopefully, one day, graduate.

Now…if you want to get into a discussion around current & future differences in NIL packages that the existing or contemplated affiliated “Collectives” of these 2 schools may currently or someday offer to prospective and current Players to buy their attendance / retention and Basketball services at their school…well that’s an ELEPHANT of a different color…and one FUBeAR has no (positive) interest in contemplating / discussing.

On the subject of endowment........

But seriously, Furman is at roughly $840 million
Gonzaga is at around $310 million

Why should Furman not try to shoot for the big time and become the next Villanova, Gonzaga, Xavier, Butler, Wake Forest, Dayton, St. Mary's ect.?

Talk about putting this University on the map.................

Stay in the SOCON, need Timmons remodeled and have to win a championship before talking A10. Also , the grass is not always greener on the other side. Sometimes you get what you wish for, i would rather be a competitive team in the SOCON , instead of a doormat in the A10 for the first couple of seasons.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage

GoPaladins.com is not affiliated with Furman University or its athletics programs.
