• NIL ‘ripples’ - How does it Affect FU, SoCon, and FCS Football

…and BYU (via Corporate sponsorship) just set the bar (paying tuition for all 36 walk-ons in the BYU Football program) that could, potentially & theoretically, skim off the top 4,680 (36x130) current & (more likely) future FCS Players.

Really, really curious how this will all shake out in the years ahead.

No problem with the kids getting dat money. I well remember sneaking in & filling my pockets with crackers packages from the Dining Hall to add to & thicken the cans of soup that were all I could afford ($.15/can if I recall) with my off-campus monthly living allowance - $200-something to pay rent, utilities, meals - because the NCAA wouldn’t let us make any money (couldn’t even work for more than some paltry annual maximum in those days). Just a-feared for the life of the ‘goose’ that laid the NIL egg - particularly at the FCS level.

Thoughts?

So I guess this means scholarship limits are out the window, right? So I guess a guy who is offered a scholarship to Furman can now go to FBS State Tech U for a sorta kinda walk-on corporate scholarship, is that right?

I’m just waiting for the ruling that student athletes no longer need to be admitted to school (in the name of equity of course).

Yeah - I kinda see a future where the Top 50 (maybe…maybe less) Football & Basketball Schools will continue some sort of affiliation with Teams REPRESENTING (though not, necessarily, composed of Players who are ALL students at those schools) their schools…because it makes financial sense for those schools to ‘hold on’ to those affiliations … and the rest of the schools will eventually move to a D3 model IF they decide to continue sponsoring Intercollegiate Athletics at all.

To satisfy ‘our’ appetites for sports competition though, corporate sponsored leagues / clubs (think Soccer in Europe) will be formed and the 2nd tier of Football & Basketball HS kids will ‘graduate’ to those Teams…until & unless those Leagues/Teams are able to outstrip the Compensation the Top 50 College-affiliated Teams are able to provide. If/When that happens, the Top 50’s will try to survive getting 2nd tier kids, but the money will then move to the Corporate-sponsored Teams…and that will be the end of college Football & Basketball - This is FUBeAR’s 20 year doomsday projection, but it could be a 10 year horizon.

IMO - the schools & the NCAA have been poor stewards of their Goose & failed to see this coming. I think the NCAA is starting to see it, but the Top 50’s (really maybe Top 30) are living high on the hog & think they will always eat 1st…just like the NCAA did. These times; they are a-changin’

I think the only way college football survives is if, at some point, major college boosters recognize that they are killing it. Do enough of them have at least a shred of sentimental attachment to traditional college football? My guess is no. If you look on the SEC equivalent of UFFP you will find endless threads about how the SEC can make more money than the BIG. The goal is to get the biggest TV contract by buying the best players. They seem to care more about the conference than their teams (because they are mentally beaten by Bama in perpetuity), and more about TV contracts than sports. They’re nuts. And what percentage of SEC fans ever spent a day in college? What do they care about college football tradition?

Eventually I’m gonna be ok with a no scholarship (since kids no longer think scholarships have value) league with real academic requirements. We could call it college football.

There we go. Now you can BUY Recruits for Good Ol’ Whatsamatta U. and take a tax deduction for your generous benevolence.

Good for the Players, maybe / questionably good for the “Charitable Organization” and another nail in the coffin for what we once knew as (or believed was mostly) non-professional Football.

The ripples are getting bigger & ain’t nobody gonna build a dam.

What will College Football look like in 5 years…maybe 3?

I think there are a couple of NIL factors that could be positive for FCS. For one thing, the current system makes it easy for cheap state schools to pay for scholarships. NIL money is different. Small private schools could potentially compete in fundraising with mid-major FBS programs, based on historic athletic donation numbers. Facebook isn't exactly lining up to pay Arkansas State punters $100,000 a year for their NIL rights.

But also, the additional financial incentive to play college football should increase the rate and quality of participation in high school football. This would provide proportionate increases in the number of good, but not power conference-level recruits to fill out the FCS ranks.

The NIL issue could impact the structural one as well. Some programs won't have the donor base to compete within their conferences . . . could cause serious competitive balance problems all over the place.

I guess there are many people in the world who have more money than sense. Like those who would give 50 grand a year to players on a 5-7 team. When they get to the SEC in might be 3-9. Ha Ha.

I like the Oklahoma QB Spencer Rattler example. Got paid a lot before the season then quickly lost his starting job to a freshman, Now he is in the transfer portal. Not too good of return on that money. You would think this would cause investors to think twice but prolly not.

This outfit we’re workng with sounds legit. What’s the point in that? Our highest profile athlete is Alex Hunter, and nobody’s ever heard of him. So does he REALLY have legit NIL value? I don’t see how. We need shady NIL where high rollers simply pay the players and call it NIL. Does the right guard at Texas really have any marketing value at all? No, but he’s gonna get a straight up salary and they will call it NIL.

FUBeAR is going back to Coaching Middle School kids. Need to get my hooks into….er, I mean, become a Trusted Advisor to these talented young men as early as possible. Come to think of it…Rec Ball / Pound Ball might be a better move…or Flag. Do they have an IMG equivalent for Kindergarten or Nursery School? I bet those young athletes could use some exceptional guidance also!

Saban and Smart today called for regulations on NIL. Even the top dogs realize this is not good for college football. They said you’re going to have the “haves” and “have nots”. We all knew this was going to get out of hand but I think it did quicker than we thought. Blatantly paying players was not supposed to be what the NIL was about.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
