I guess we can just focus on ETSU now.. which means if they are playing this weekend we get an extra day or 2 to practice for them.

I would assume we would still practice tomorrow (at least.. maybe Friday too) and can study a lot of film on ETSU. That seems a pretty big advantage. Still would have liked to play Colgate but this is a positive...

The real advantage would have been to play a home game. Waiting 5 weeks to play in the friendly confines of Paladin stadium is hard on everyone.

We have hung 52 and 56 on these guys the last 2 years, if our offense struggles again we are probably toast on the season. I feel this is a must win from at least a program morale standpoint!

Agree with you Mr Flagman :D Just finding a positive. Believe me I REALLY wanted to play Colgate. Felt it was a great chance for a top 25 win. Also hate sitting on that Elon loss for two weeks

edit - it appears ETSU moved their game to Friday though. I assumed they were playing Saturday. So not quite as many days advantage for us but still at least one or two days in our favor.

So ETSU has played D2 Mars Hill and win 28-7. They got killed by UT 59-7. Not to read too much into that but UT isn't a great FBS team and absolutely killed ETSU. And ETSU played closer to Mars Hill than they played w UT. tough thing is their game before us is VMI. So not a WCU or Mercer we can read too much from as I wouldn't be shocked to see VMI go winless in conference. Any other league five would tell us more about ETSU.

Obviously if VMI hangs around w ETSU that's a good sign for us

Last scores were 2017. 56 - 35 good guys. And 2016 was 52- 7 for good guy... I'll have to look but I think ETSU was scoring a lot more last year than in 2016. I would expect they keep improving as they are a young team growing together. Should be their best year this year unless there were Seniors who transferred in at the beginning ? Will be interesting to see how well we move the ball and score this year. I suspect We will Need a better effort from our D than last year - can't allow 35 points

Have to look at run/pass numbers later. Anyone know if ETSU v VMI is on replay anywhere? Is it ESPN+ ?

Well, they have to play it before it can be on "Replay" and, yes, it will be on ESPN+ (LIVE @ 2:30 PM on Friday, 9/14...and on Replay shortly afterward)

ETSU has been a thorn in the side for some SoCon programs, but for whatever reason they have been a bad matchup against Furman.
I THINK it's because they aren't that good at stopping the run? I will have to look though - that's my old memory which could easily be wrong.

Only thing that scares me is I (again) THINK they are starting to score more as their players mature. We don't want to get in a scoring battle

While I don't like using the term "must win" if it isn't a must win game, this is probably a close one. If we are playing only 10 games, Furman has little room to mess around, and especially not in a conference game we are favored to win.

ETSU has some new faces. They have a new coaching staff and a transfer QB from Temple.

Doing a quick scan, they're currently 2-1. They beat D2 Mars Hill and VMI. They were trounced by Tennessee. They really have not looked particularly good (of course, neither has Furman).

In game 1, ETSU took a 14-7 lead against a bad D2 at home into the fourth quarter. Mars Hill is currently 0-3, having lost to ETSU, and then being soundly thumped by both Shaw and Lenior Rhyne.

Seeing the ETSU result, I thought maybe VMI was better than I expected. They really aren't. They turned the ball over a bunch and looked incredibly slow on film. I still am sticking with my prediction that VMI will go winless this year.

Offensively, the Bucs look like they run an offense similar to what we saw in Elon (and really Colgate, too). Single back, multi-receiver looks out of the shotgun. They try for balance, averaging roughly 170 ypg passing and rushing. Like Furman, they've coughed the ball up a bunch this season.

The QB has a big arm. He's thrown a bunch of picks this season, and is under 50% completions, but he can launch them downfield. He is their third leading rusher, so he will tuck it and go pretty routinely.

Defensively, they aren't terrible. They've surrendered only 58 ypg on the ground. Of course, two of the three teams they've played this season have been pretty weak, so that may explain the numbers a bit.

I think Furman is favored here. Probably heavily favored. The Paladins have handled ETSU the last two seasons. However, the Bucs seemingly every year surprise a team in Johnson City. Last year they upset Mercer. In 2016, they knocked off a ranked Samford team. We need a clean game and put that Elon contest in the rearview.

Its family weekend up at ETSU so bucs should have a good crowd out for the game
Looks like the home side is over-sold and about 5-600 left on the visitors side.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
