The most I can always hope for in these type of games against an elite FBS team, not just a bad to average FBS team like UCF or Michigan State ... hold them under 50 and for us to get at least 1 TD. Will be hoping for much more next year against Georgia State and maybe even Virginia Tech.

Clemson 49
Furman 17

Being realistic and knowing we are playing an elite team, it's Clemson 55, Furman 10. Quite frankly, I don't care about this game. I want us to play hard, not get anyone hurt, take the money and run. I care more about beating Elon the following week. Go Paladins!

Clemson 56
Furman 10

Hard to pick a score when you aren't sure which QB is going to play.

A little logic behind my upcoming glass-half-full prediculation:

Consider the last 3 games vs Clemson (‘03, ‘07, ‘12).
2003 - 2nd game of the year. Paladins 1.5 years removed from a Natl Championship appearance. CU coming off a loss to UGA. FU had a strong Defense that year. We only allowed 20 or more points to 3 teams all year- Clemson being one. Though we were 6-5, we lost the 4 FCS games by a total of 10 points. Clemson was a respectable 9-4 that year. Final: Clemson 28, Furman 17

2007- 3rd game of the year. CU 2-0. FU was mediocre. Had some good wins but inconsistent on Offense and Defense was below average for us. Went 6-5. Clemson was again 9-4, the final loss coming in OT to Auburn new the Chic-fil-a bowl. Although we lost by 4 scores, they scored more points on 4 FBS opponents, including 70 on Central Michigan.
Final: Clemson 38, Furman 10

2012- 3rd game of year. Bruce Fowler era. Furman lacked an identity on O and struggled to score all year. Defense was on the field a lot and wasn’t aggressive at all. We went 3-8. Clemson had Sammy Watkins and Taj Boyd and went 11-2 that year including a win over no.6 LSU in the ChicfilA peach Bowl. Though we got schelacked, they didn’t hit 50.
Final: Clemson 41, Furman7

2018- FIRST game of year. Clemson is at LEAST as good as 2012, probably better. Top talent at all positions. Same coach. FU I feel is more similar to the 2003 squad, with defense being a major strength and a confidence we’ve not had in years. New coach. (Who I believe was o-line coach in 03). New (and brilliant) coordinators. Aggressive D.
I see no reason to think we can’t hold them under 50. I also doubt Dabo runs up the score. I also believe our Quarles-led O behind Hendricks-inspired O-line play can manage at least the point total of a mediocre 07 squad (even though we’re playing the best D-line in college football history 🙄) Throw in a rain shower (40% chance) to cool the air and wet the ball, and we can make it respectable.
Final: Clemson 41, Furman 16 (prediction)
...but I could believe 35-20 :)

2003-Only game where we had "a chance" late. IIRC we were down 28-17 with about 10 mins to go and had the ball in CU territory at about their 40 before we turned it over.ending hope.

2007- We out gained CU 384-377 and held the James Davis and CJ Spiller duo to 57 yds rushing. Spiller had 9 carries for -1 yd. Felton had 74 yds. rushing and FU out rushed CU 140-62. 5 turnovers were the Paladins downfall, plus one TD called back.

2012- It was respectable at the half and this was the first time CU put 40 on FU since 1962.

The big difference in this years Clempson team and those teams is they are MUCH better where it counts, in the trenches on both sides of the ball. Their backups are just as good. They also have experienced great success and now expect it, not just hope for it. Playing with QB's with no experience I just don't see us scoring in double digits or even at all. I could see us in single digits in first downs. Hoping I am totally wrong.

Wasn't 2003 the year Brad Bell hit a Clemson kick returner so hard that the entire stadium let out an audible cringe?

I remember the play, not the year.

2003 was also the year that I believe on the first drive Bo Moore went about 70 yards for a TD and it was called back due to a hold. No clue if it was questionable or not, but I remember the stadium being stunned for about 4 seconds.

Believe if in some mythical world you could have paired that 2003 D with the 2004 or 2005 O against the 2003 Tigers, the Paladins could have pulled off the win.

I remember it was questionable. A late flag yards behind the play.

One of those "no way Furman could reel off a 70 yard run against Clemson without committing a penalty somewhere" calls.

Remember the play very well. I think the refs seen a lynch mob forming and threw the late flag. That was a blasphemous play in tigger stadium. The natives were restless.

Reading comments on Clemson forums that their offense is licking their chops to throw the ball against Amir Trapp, who they consider undersized at 5'8.

To this point none of them have seemed to realize that our safety is 6'4 and two of our other primary CBs are 6'3 and 6'1.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
