Less than a decade old. What a waste of funds through the years.

As I recall, lacrosse was started with a rather large donation that included the new turf in Paladin stadium. Have those funds been depleted?

I don't know about the funds but the turf has been depleted.

I believe the donor that gave the $5m to start the programs is on the Board of Trustees, and participated in this decision.

Good idea. Bad execution.
I can agree with that. I was fully on board thinking that Furman could compete on the national level quickly in men's lacrosse due to the academic profile of the university, the head coach being brought in, and the limited number of teams playing nationally. I was wayyyy off unfortunately. Think they could have been better simply with a draw control specialist that was worth a damn. Was maybe the only sport that could bring in Penn State, North Carolina and Duke to campus and now that's gone.

So he/she gave the money, and is on the BOT now, and was part of the unanimous decision by the BOT to go along with President Davis's and AD Donnelly's proposal that included ending the program. Good for the donor.
Perhaps it was not a white elephant donation.
It became a white elephant, of course, but I do not think the donor intended it as such.
You can look up the definition and origin of the term "white elephant gift", which I did not know or had forgotten until I looked it up a moment ago.

Can we go back to natural grass now?
It should be whatever Coach Hendrix prefers. But I wonder what the 10-year cost for planting & maintaining grass versus turf is. Also, I wonder if it matters to women’s lacrosse.

Not an expert, but I do know people who are. As I understand it, just about the only thing that is on the negative side of the ledger for today’s turf vs. grass is that it’s not grass. Other than not being grass, it’s way better than or equal to grass in all aspects. It KILLS grass in cost, playability, and ‘endurance,’ is the same for injuries - some debate remains on that...both ways. It still may be a bit hotter, but, in August & September in the South, “hot” is just part of the game.

Now...if you want to talk about that outdoor carpet laid over concrete that we Boomers played on - completely different story!

If FUBeAR is Coaching, he’ll take the fake stuff, but still miss playing on grass.

My son liked grass better in HS. Got burns from the turf. But that was the only problem. Except that the principal ordered the wrong gold for the logo, and now the field doesn’t match any of our stuff which is stupid looking.

I always wondered about the pellets getting up into people's eyes as you see a lot of them flying into the air on close up video angles. But have never really heard of anyone having eye injuries so I guess it's not a big deal.

Turf - probably because of the pellets - is hotter than blazes. No comparison to grass, regardless of what month it is.

Regarding that carpet over concrete stuff - don't know how that was ever allowed.

Dont know if this was reported before... but if true it sheds a whole new lite on SD's opinion of Coach Meade. Basically this nailed the coffin long before COVID

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
