How did Wofford get UNC to play them in Spartanburg? Was that a relationship thing between Coach Roy and Mike?
The answer to anything Woffy related is Jerry 'The Pervert' Richardson

UNC is good about playing at smaller schools especially when they have a good reason. They played at UNCW because they remodelled their old gym and played at UNCA when they opened their new gym. On the other hand Duke would never do that. In fact Duke never plays a true road game unless they have to like in the ACC/Big10 challenge. If FU ever built a new facility or even remodeeled Timmons UNC would prolly come.

I think it's also to give current players a shot to play closer to their home city. For example, I know they played at Northern Iowa (I think they lost) when Harrison Barnes from Iowa was on the team. That part might not help Furman since they come to Clemson every year or every other year.

I think we have taken solid steps to being back to normal (relatively speaking) by this summer, let's hope for the best

I think there will be more than emphasis on more localized scheduling - SC, GA, NC.
We cannot just get whoever we want in that footprint but there are at least 12 OOC non-Power 5 opponents in these 3 states; and there are also at least 10 D-2 potential opponents within 150 miles.
The season length might be reduced by 20% or more.
Life is going to be different in many ways over the next 12 months +,
including sports, including our beloved college sports.
Maybe live attendance will be greatly curtailed.
Who know.

It's absolutely money

The amount of $$ it takes to buy a home game is crazy. Even mid-majors get low six figures.....a P5 team? I'm guessing but maybe 200k-300k? and even at that, why give up a home game? Use your NCAA share to buy a bunch of home games from financially strapped mid majors and don't play a true road game until January....
Richmond University with an undergraduate enrollment of 3,200 played Vanderbilt and Boston College at home this year.
They also played Wisconsin and Auburn in a prestigious non-conference tournament and Alabama on the road.
Five majors and zero non D-1's for a school very similar to Furman in enrollment and academics.

One question to ask here is what is Richmond's BUDGET for bball compared to Furman.

I have no idea but I am guessing we lag behind.

It was a whole different landscape back in the 70’s. There were less than 50 percent in the number of D1 teams now. In the 70’s there was 4 D1 teams in SC. I think there are 10+ now. The NCAA tourney was not the mega million media event it is today. There was no national TV until the finals. You had to win your conference tourney to get in so regular season games didn’t matter that much.
With nearly triple the number of D-1 teams (353) than the 70's one might reach the logical conclusion that its much easier now to play an all D-1 schedule. 340 potential D-1 opponents and we're playing Columbia International ?
Furman basketball has become obsessed with breaking records for total wins and has developed an insatiable desire for cupcakes.

Nonsense. We don't want to play these teams. Other Div. 1 will not play us.

With all due respect, you are probably not aware of the process, costs, and challenges, with scheduling.

If folks spend any amount of time with our coaching staff and the AD, then they would be far less likely to say things like this.

According to Auburn's Bruce Pearl, the negative response to that question applies equally to D-1 high majors as well.

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
