Defense creates offense...Here are some numbers...Western's Dotson and Wofford's Goodwin were 15-of-17 for 33 points in consecutive halves vs Furman...You're not going to shoot well every night, but you'd better danged defend...Here's another...Furman has forced 33 turnovers for 33 points in the last three games...Opponents have forced 38 for 41 points over the past three games...Furman is not getting it done defensively.
Doesn't it work the other way too? Good offense promotes good defense. When shots are falling it energizes you and when they are not you get frustrated and get mentally down.

In case anybody wants to see Storm Murphy abusing two Furman defenders like they are standing still, its being replayed over ESPN now
Was honestly stunned when I checked the box score and saw that he only had 8 points. Felt like 20. Guess I got all the little white guards confused. Combined for 36.

That doesn’t change the fact that if you only score 52 points in a game that was a rout in the first half, you are likely to lose. If we held them to 55 points, that would be great defense, right? We still lose by 3. Ya gotta score!

We've beaten this horse (no pun intended) to death. Let's move on. Still a lot of basketball to play. If you've really lost confidence in our team and coaches, give your tickets to someone who will use them.

It hasn't been 24 hours, yet. We've still got 10 minutes!

As expected, some people have their schtick and will always go to it when needed.

We played a very poor first half on offense and couldn't make up for it in the second half and deserved to lose.

That does not mean the rest of the season is doomed, it doesn't mean Wofford is suddenly a powerhouse, but it does mean we need to make some improvements - all of which are doable. In case memories fade even quicker than usual, Wofford just got stomped at Chattanooga. They trailed by 23 at the half and by 30 at one point in the second half. Their comeback attempt came up far short in that game. But they came right back and played a better game the next time out. We need to do the same.

There is nobody we play in this conference we can't beat and many we should beat. Just stop it.

BTW, look at all the upsets this weekend in college basketball. #4 Auburn lost again, this time to unranked Florida by 69-47, #5 Butler lost to unranked DePaul by 13, #12 West Virginia lost to 7-9 Kansas State by 16, #16 Wichita State lost to unranked Houston, #20 Colorado lost by 21 to unranked Arizona, #21 Ohio State lost to unranked Penn State by 14.

Kenpom has us ranked above UNC-Chapel Hill.

And we’re upset.

Don't forget their assistant was here last year and I am sure Jay had a circle around this game and they should get the credit. They should have known our warts better than anyone. The question is did we run our offense poorly or did they defense it well. A is an execution issue-B is a design problem. Maybe both?
The place this can hurt the most is recruiting. Feb 22nd is as big a day for us as Friday was for them.

Another score for upset weekend - # Duke loses at home in ACC play. (Lost to #11 Louisville - still an upset.)
William and Mary was rolling along, undefeated in conference and in first place in the CAA until getting crushed by almost 30 points (84-57) at Drexel. They are doomed now. Might as well pack it up.

Our recruiting is mostly done for this year. I doubt this one game will have much bearing on whatever we have in mind going forward.

UNCG 70
FU 82
Speaking of other games. I just watched a good Utah St team that is 11-4 blow an 18 point lead in the last 3:36 and then lose to Boise St in OT. Amazingly USU was 8-9 in free throws in that time and Boise St scored 27 points in the last 3:36 so it is not like USU missed free throws. They did have 4 turnovers. They still had a 5 point lead with 8 seconds left and BSU hit a 3 with 4 seconds left, stole the inbounds and made a layup with 1.9 seconds left. A great example of it aint over til its over.

All they have to do is play a little better on defense and they will be fine...That's all I mean...They're a good basketball team.

In my opinion, all these upsets and wild swings are the result of the coaching trend that emphasizes the three point shot so highly. Teams live and die with the 3 and it makes for inconsistency and lousy basketball. Move the line to the pro line and open up the court. Reinvent the 10 foot pull up jumper that has such high makeability. The 3 pointer as a first option is not a good thing.

Furman's offense is not predicated on three-point shots, its a motion that sets up open looks...A lot of them from three...But when. Furman misses open looks, you can't say its coaching for relying on the three too much...It's missing shots...A coach can only do so much...Players have to make shots...That's the bottom line.

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
