Article confirms, as you suggested, that he'll play safety.

My inclination is to watch the safety position as fall camp starts. Furman has 11 players listed at safety, and have added two more guys in this class that played that position in high school. I don't think they will all stick there.

In my view, high schools tend to put their most athletic players on defense at safety, giving them freedom to move, cover, and tackle. FCS programs tend to recruit that position heavily due to the athletic flexibility of those players. Some guys are a more natural fit for the position, while others can likely be deployed elsewhere.
That is a great point. The type you are speaking of is an asset. They can play multiple positions and we have seen what two years can mean for some guys (an extra 2" and 30 pds isnt uncommon) we are off to a great start. You never know how a recruit might impact the program down the road, and with the staff we have in place I think player development will be taken to the next level.

From his tweet Jack Barton, 6-4 235 DE, from Centennial HS is a Paladin. Eighteen offers according to Rivals.
I know HKB60 is excited! Has he found his way to this edition of theUFFP yet?

A couple thoughts on Barton.

Really long player and a good athlete. Hard to really get a good read on technical skills as he simply seemed to be a better athlete than most of the guys he's facing. Easy comp watching the high school tape is Dru Seabrook.

He's another guy that had a bunch of SoCon offers, including an offer from James Madison. Again, I think we are targeting the right guys.

He’s also a ‘legacy’ whose Uncle was an All SoCon OLman for Furman & whose Dad played OL at UT-Knoxville. Guess he wasn’t athletic enough to play OL, but I’m sure he’ll be a good’n on the DL for the Dins despite that limitation. ;)

Also, in the responses after Barton's post is one from Sebastian Rice, former Furman player who appears to be the DC and DL coach at Centennial.

So, add that to the list of things I didn't know and another Paladin in the coaching ranks.

Thrilled that my nephew Jack has committed to FU. Can't wait to see him on the field playing for the Paladins. A great athlete that can make a difference. Like #54 said, almost a great enough player to play the OL but will be a factor on the DL!!

Great too have another player from Roswell on the team. The academics are strong, they play against strong teams and they are well coached. I do not think I am biased just because I have lived here for 46 years.

Two of the last three offers are from NC. Justin Olson, 6-3 175 WR/QB, from N.Mecklenburg and Dominic Roberto, 6-0 230 LB/RB, from Fayetteville. There are others though.

Dominic Roberto’s HS coach (Matt Sochovka’s father) retweeted the coaches tweet so maybe that’s a clue it’s him.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
