I think the real head scratcher is Central Arkansa. They have gotten a lot of mileage out of their opening game win over WKU. They have lost to Nicholls 34-14 and week before last lost to SE La. 34-0. They also have one point wins over the #7 and #8 teams in the Southland. They are still ranked #11. :o
That raises an interesting point. While our two FCS losses weren't exactly razor-thin margins (17 points each), I am surprised at how much credit teams above us have gotten for absolute blowouts. CA is a great example with those two losses you mentioned. Kennesaw got smoked by 24 at home against Monmouth. North Dakota lost by 35 at Idaho State and 31 at North Dakota State (not a bad loss obviously). Southern Illinois is especially annoying ... 18-point loss to SE Missouri, 13 at Arkansas State, 18 at South Dakota State and 14 at Illinois State. They'll almost certainly lose to NDSU Saturday, probably handily. So 4 FCS losses (7-5 overall), none by closer than 14 and they are expected to be in the field. I'm sure there are others but I stopped at the MVFC.

A similarly-resumed team to Furman in my opinion is Towson. 7-4 and host 4-6 Elon, so should get to 8-4. No non-D1 wins, one FBS loss (38-0 at #9 Florida), losses to Villanova, Albany and James Madison (all within 17 points) ... wins against CAA teams that are 6-5, 5-6, 5-6 and 4-7. Beat Bucknell and NC Central out of conference. The one major difference? A 28-21 win at The Citadel to open the year. Will be curious to see if Towson is a "lock" with a win Saturday.

......and we won't mention Weber St. getting beat 38-7 and falling 4 spots and still in line for a seed.

The committee says they reference the COACHES poll but AGS poll has been the best predictor of at-large bids for several years And right now AGS has us at 16

https://www.anygivensaturday.com/showth ... -predictor
I'm still not as confident as some, but it would be downright stunning for a team that's been ranked in the top 25 all year and was twice ranked in the top 10 - most recently as last week - to be left out of the field entirely, especially considering who our losses are to.
I think it would be better for WC to win Saturday vs. Citadel. WC is in. We don't need for Citadel to even be in consideration. They would have head to head vs. FU plus wins over GT and WC. They would be 7-5.
I think I agree. In a perfect world we would get a share of title and a playoff berth, but me personally I would choose the playoff berth if I had the option of only one. And The Citadel being officially out at 6-6 would help at least a little in Furman's quest for the playoffs. I'm also pulling hard for SE Louisiana against Nicholls Thursday night and throw in Incarnate Word vs. Central Arkansas on Friday for good measure. I think CA is probably in regardless of this game as they have an FBS win, no non-FCS wins, and a quality win over Austin Peay, but you never know. Also I'm pulling for Kentucky over UT Martin, Stony Brook over Albany and Southern Utah at North Dakota in some other bubble games to look out for.
fufanatic. Thanks. I do appreciate the list of teams so I know who to watch scores ... and yeah I think most of us are torn some on Woff Citadel. Really want both a SoCon title and. A playoff berth. If I were a senior thiugh I think playoffs might mean more (v SoCon) than if I were younger. Got a ring last year. . I wouldn’t want my career to be over. If in playoffs everything is theoretically possible ... if I was a younger player I’d probably pull for Citadel and get that ring! Hope playoffs happen anyway but get that ring.

Either way would be great to see SoCon champ number on field house as 2018 and 2019. ...

Furman is 7-2 in FCS play and has zero "bad" losses. I think that will stack up well nationally.

Not good news/ Looks like the SEla QB got hurt in the first quarter> SE La was up 14-0 but its now tied at half. Really need SE La to win. Nicholls will get the auto bid with a win and will prolly be a bid stealer.

Terrible throw by SELA QB, missed a wide slam open man that would have given them the lead in the 4th

Big INT by SELA, chance to put Nichols to bed here with 3mins. left and the ball on Nichols 30

SELA scores to go up 27-21, kicker chokes on the PAT, still 2mins. left

SELA fumbles on the 1 yard line lol

SELA is one of the biggest choke teams of all time after this one, what a choke job

I really don't think this mattered much though, we already knew the corrupt SLC commissioner will get his leagues top 3 teams all in the playoffs no matter what, they are all trash teams really, that league went 0-3 last year in the playoffs against scholarship programs

I think you are right but it would have been harder to get Nicholls in. Now it is a slam dunk. Really stupid coaches decision to put in a cold player to run the ball and stupid decision to try to extend the ball.

SELA lost to 5-6 Incarnate Word and 6-5 McNeese. This really didn’t matter.

Yes but they also beat #11 34-0 2 weeks ago. They are in at 7-4. Nicholls would have had 5 losses.

UCA is in their own conference, really hasn't done much, and has been blasted by both Nicholls and SELA. You could make an argument that their highest ranked team is the weakest of the three.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
