I met the new AD at the Ga. State pre-game tailgate. He has some very ambitious goals where basketball scheduling in concerned. He wants to schedule the big boys, UNC, Clemson, USC, perhaps even Villanova, to play in the arena downtown. Those teams won’t plan in Timmons, he said. It’s too intimidating. [His words, not mine.]

That is great to hear. Other teams have been able to schedule similar games at a bigger arena in their area so why can't Furman? We've been told they have tried but maybe Jason can finally get it done.

Talk is cheap. We’ll see. I’d say the best chance is Villanova. Clemson, USC, UNC would be home games for them in downtown downtown Greenville.

Which would allow us to send their "home" fans home disappointed.

As long as Martin and Brownell are coaching I think you can mark SC and Clempson off the possible list.

Whether we ever get Clemson or USC to come to Greenville anytime soon IS questionable, and affirm agrees that those 2 and UNC would have more of their own fans than we would have our fans. Both of those likely facts have been pointed out above, by other posters.
Affirm does not dislike the idea of having 1 Furman home game a year at the BSWA, but affirm would prefer for the effort to go towards getting teams would be ones "other than Clemson, USC, and other teams in the ACC or SEC" (since all of those already come regularly to the state for games against Clemson or USC). Here is my list of the sort of teams affirm would like to see the effort go towards:
Villanova
Georgetown
UConn
Maryland
Ohio State
Michigan
Michigan State
Indiana
Kansas
Baylor
Texas
Arizona
UCLA
UNLV
Utah
Gonzaga
Memphis
Cincinnati
Purdue
Indiana
Again, only 1 per year. The rest of our home games, due to the expense to us for having a game at the BSWA, should be sought for Timmons Arena.
Affirm has made numerous suggestions, in numerous previous posts, of the sorts of big name teams that affirm would like to see Furman schedule for OOC, whether at home or (for the majority of the big names) away. Affirm will not go into those suggestions again here.
The present post is about affirm's view of who we should seek for 1 game per year in the BSWA.
On the other hand, our new AD is the AD, and affirm wishes him the best. If he can make it work to bring in teams like USC, Clemson, and UNC for games at the BSCW, then affirm will support that, of course. Affirm is just stating what affirm thinks would work better for Furman.

He wasn’t very optimistic about getting Villanova. They’ve had so much success in their home arena, until we came in, that they’re not likely to venture out.

Just looked at their schedule for the coming season. Their only OOC games away from home that are not part of a tournament (such as the one they are participating in in Conway, SC) are University of Southern California, Ohio State, and 2 very nearby schools which are Delaware and St. Joseph's.
