Credit WoCo for following the strategy of funding its big three high profile sports (football, men’s hoops, baseball) for success at the expense of virtually all its other sports. When they went D1, football and men’s hoops were priorities; baseball not. It showed in W-Ls. About 4-5 years ago baseball got significantly increased scholarship, financial assistance support they had never experienced. It’s translated to the field. Their coach has also come a long way in development, making good hires, recruiting, and following a sound scheduling strategy( something we need to emulate). Credit to them. Furman probably ranks in the middle of the pack (at best, and probably now trails Wofford) in total scholarship support of its baseball program given FU’s new model for academic aid. FU can compete now, but it’s getting harder (see above) and with our admission standards, which are easily the highest in the league. I wish we’d fully commit to being good in the Big Three. Football and hoops have their unique challenges, but they have excellent leadership and enough resources to win titles. It would be nice if baseball could join that club as a FU priority, which would be new for the sport.
