Fans love to talk about psychological factors such as intimidation and motivation. They embrace history and recall moments from epic games vs. an opponent from years back. It's all part of the pregame hoopla and is a lot of fun. Players don't talk about any of that. This FU team has a chance to go to the NCAA tournament, the Holy Grail of college basketball. Wofford College's BB team likely stands in the way of that. That is all the motivation they need. And that motivation should translate into a defensive intensity that will help to stifle WC's excellent shooting team. That defensive intensity is the essential part of Furman's game plan. We are making too much of Fletcher Magee. He is what used to be called a "chucker" - but he is also a damned fine long range shooter. If memory serves me, we nearly beat WC in Spartanburg because Jackson (IMO their best player) was not a major factor. We concentrated so much on Magee that Storm Murphy got a wide open jumper to beat us. Secondly, we take a lot of 3 point shots. Since we take 'em, we need to make 'em at a good rate - IMO in excess of 40%. If we play "Beserker" defense (challenge every pass and shot) and make our 3's, not only will Furman beat WC, they will blow them away. If we hold them in the 50's again, break out the Red Auerbach's early.

Still waiting to see what the vegas line will be for our game:

When you go to the above espn link look to your right it has FU as a 1 point and the over under at 139.5. FYI it looks like money is going of FU as it was WC -1 earlier on Friday.

I'll be watching for contributions from Furman's athletic forwards, Mounce and Gurley. I think their play will be the difference. In game one against Wofford, those two had a combined 6 total points.

Furman does good work against their opponent's best player. McGee will shoot, but I think our defense will be right in front of him when he does.

Rafferty is a matchup problem for Wofford. They struggled with him in the first game. Expect the Terriers to try and deny him the ball and force someone else to beat them.

Mounce and Gurley are the two x-factors. We'll need them.

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
