Not that its of any interest to the powers to be but Hampton will join SoCon in lax but

Also effective July 1, current SoCon associate members Air Force Academy and Bellarmine University will depart for the newly formed ASUN Conference.

Mlax cut probably had it coming but still hard to swallow when other schools can support

FU lax was badly in need of a restart anyway. Meade was not the right guy to build a program at Furman. At a time like this it was easier to just drop the sport than to go thru a full rehabilitation . He was simply not a good fit here. It’s too bad. Furman could have been a really good lax school.

True. Meade hire made a big splash and put FU on the lax map quickly. But that wore out quickly without success especially when Richmond and High Point were putting togther pretty good programs

Meade decided to start competing quickly instead of waiting a year to build the program. In hindsight maybe not a good idea. Plus he immediately scheduled the big guys... Duke, UNC, etc.

Lastly, he had a HUGE contract for FU standards. Wonder how much was left for assistants

When Baseball was cut there was huge social media campaign from coaches, players, alum, etc

From the lax program? Crickets... as far as can tell not 1 tweet, statement or otherwise from Coaches. Very strange...

Why would he complain? He was paid big money for 5 years and I assume had more time on his contract. FU didn't hire Meade away from Navy. He had been relieved of his coaching duties a few years before and was serving in an administrative position looking for a job when someone at Furman bailed him out. He lost all kinds of recruits and had a bunch of kids leave because they didn't want to be treated like they were in Navy Seal BUD's school. He had to play the last 3 seasons without a face off man and got hammered. That is inexcusable and is like playing baseball getting only one out per inning when your team is up. Hiring him for that kind of money was a terrible decision and doomed the program from the getgo. Its a shame.

Absolutely insane contract duration given by GC. Complete waste of time and a ton of donor money for what should have been a nice addition to Furman athletics.

Yep. The ladies program hired a good young asst and has done fairly well

Its a darn shame becuase Lax at FU could have really fit especially when the big P5 programs are not represented in the sport

Just curious...no idea of the correct answer...

Was Meade & his contract primarily the ‘work’ of GC, Smolla, the primary LAX benefactor, other LAX donors, or some combination of those. If “combination,” please elaborate, if you can. As I said, I’ve always been a bit curious how that came together.

Found this on wiki. No disrepect to Mr Trone. Your generosity is amazing. Thanks very much

Trone's contributions to Furman University include a $5 million grant for a student center and to create men's and women's lacrosse teams, and the lead $500,000 gift for the Riley Foundation's endowment to support disadvantaged South Carolina students.[67][68] The Trone Student Center was dedicated in 2013 and named for Trone and his wife, in honor of their $3.5 million contribution

GC wanted to get a big name and Richie rolled them in to a no cut long term contract. The administration was playing with somebody else’s money and paid up. Lots of really good young coaches were interested and taken a long term approach and developed a successful program like Richmond. By the way that is now Congressman David Trone... you can self finance a lot of campaigns on the profit from Total Wine and Liquor.

Whoever was behind the whole thing did not know a lot about lacrosse and that was the main problem. Meade had a big name in LAX circles from a decade before when he took a service academy team deep into the playoffs a few times. LAX is a fast changing sport and it is hard for a coach to keep up. He also did not have the right temperament for Furman and that hurt recruiting and retention of players. FU is not the Naval Academy. No effort was made to educate the Furman fan base about a game that is relatively new to the south and attendance was awful as a result. Its a shame because LAX attracts a good type of kid that fits the academic profile of the FU student body. The players seemed like a great bunch of kids with their enthusiastic support of our basketball team at homes game. They regularly appeared on academic honor rolls for the university and the SoCon. It was a very good fit that should have worked great. There were a ton of good young assistants at major programs who would have loved the Furman job and built a lasting program. "Building" a program does not entail scheduling the best teams in the country right away and getting murdered. The ladies coach did not do that and it is now a successful program.

With recent developments, can the men’s lax players come back, identify as female, and ‘man’ the women’s lax Team?

Just askin’

It's 2021, you can do whatever you want. However, I think the NCAA has put in a limit on the number of times a player can change identity genders in one season. I believe it is no more than two "switchbacks" in any one season. This new rule gives a whole new meaning to the transfer portal process that is so popular.

Harvard vehemently disagrees with this NCAA rule that could cause depression or even suicides among gender fluid student athletes.

https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/ge ... 0120321544

They should be supported & encouraged to identify and/or express (those are, apparently, different) themselves as male, female, or another non-binary gender identity & expression which they might choose at any given moment in time.

For example, a student athlete should be allowed to play the 1st half of a lacrosse game with the Men’s Team (if one exists) at home and then go across town, let’s say, and play the 2nd half of the Women’s Lacrosse away game, if their truth of their gender changed at halftime. Otherwise, their mental health could be seriously compromised. Certainly, no Coach, school, conference, or the NCAA would want to endanger their student athletes, nor face the liability risk associated if such actions led to a suicide, or a mass shooting, or other such tragedies due to causing the mental anguish of a student athlete.

This discrimination & persecution of gender fluid student athletes must not stand in a civilized society!

It is funny that this is coming from the “listen to the science” people. Only it isn’t funny anymore is it? The silly scenarios you joke about will probably start happening for real in another year or two while the rest of the world snickers.
