Why? Nice place to live, absolutely wonderful athletes to work with and an alumni base with relatively low expectations for major sports success.He did a great job there and was rewarded with a big time program to run.
Great school. Beautiful immediate surroundings. Prestigious. Historic. Excellent students. Excellent alumni base. High noticeability.
He did an outstanding job there, just as we knew he would. (We were fortunate to have him. Army was fortunate to have him also.)
HOWEVER:
- salary and salary prospects relatively low compared to “major programs”;
- “major sports program” primarily in football, and limited even in that;
- somewhat different sort of situation compared to other major schools, meaning one needs to avoid staying there too long and not learning how things go in the so-called real world or normal world of college and college athletics
- cold winters
- although you can somewhat easily drive to places somewhat nearby, still West Point itself seems to be in quite an isolated area.
- they’re in a major renovation project with football stadium.
That’s some of my impressions that caused me to say what I wrote about being glad to be leaving there.
It was great experience for him, I feel certain.
TCU may be another good stepping stone to additional greatness - and even more salary - for Mike Buddie.
Again, thankful that Furman had him.
