Samford at Furman , Wed 7 PM

I wonder when is the last time we have played a team who has won 17 games in a row. Samford lost to Purdue when they were # 3 in the country (now # 2) and VCU and has won 17 in a row since then to now be 17-2. Pretty impressive.

We won’t win if we have a 10 minute plus drought with only 6 points. It will probably take our best game of the year to win.

Gotta limit the turnovers if we want to have a shot to win. They average 11.4 steals per game.

They seem to full court press the entire game. Opposing teams struggle against the pressure, most only starting to set up their offense with less than 20 seconds left on the play clock. We win if we can break the press with 23+ seconds still on the play clock.

I watched the first 2/3 of the Mercer-Sammy game on replay. Mercer had an awful time with the Sammy press in the first half but did better in the second half and made a decent game out of it.

It was a very helter-skelter type of game with both teams making lots of mistakes. Their post player is going to be a handful for our bigs, though.

Other than that if we handle the press O.K. we should win the game. The all game full court press might come back to haunt them in the second half.

Wonder if Huey will be available? He had ice on his ankle at the end of the game Saturday.

Dare them to press JP all game…He’ll have 40 if they do…Press works well in segments, but don’t think they will do that the whole game to FU.

The key to beating a press is to NOT have to set up your offense with limited time left on the clock. That is what they are trying to make you do. You beat a press by getting the ball down the court before the defense and get to the rim on a break for layups and short jumpers. If Whitt takes the inbound and beats the 2 pressers off the dribble we will get many fast break baskets. You need to spend as little time as possible in the backcourt passing the ball sideways. Bring it on if we are ready.

Agree, we will probably see a lot of the small team that ended the game Saturday with AW being the tallest at 6’5” and 4 guards.

Oh, I agree. Nevertheless, we still need to get the ball up the court with more than 23 seconds on the shot clock. Thankfully, our guards do a great job with rebounding and pushing the ball up the court. We will be just fine with their pressure. Bring it on.

Samford fan logic - one of their fans posted a comment on their board mentioning that Furman's attendance was 1 more for the FU-WCU game than Samford's attendance for their game with Mercer. He said Furman must have checked the box score for the SU-MU game and that it was " typical Furman delusionary behavior". Furman's game with the Catamounts actually ended before Samford-Mercer started. Losing to the Paladins last year during their best season in the SoCon seems to have a mark in their psyche. They need imaginary reasons to get irritated.

I like Jasper's strategy. Get the ball up the court. Do not pass back and forth upteen times and do not get trapped in the corner. I like us having 2 ball handing guards in the game at the same time ie Pegues and Whitt.

Also don't let the bigs be handling the ball in the backcourt.

I think we'll be just fine. Looking forward to a great game.
