Hard to win with 50 points on the bench.

if the freshman are not good enough to play under these conditions , how good do you think they are?

Not worth burning RS for a game or two. Especially when they’ve probably not been as well prepared as not been in the rotation.

I see your point and know that RS stuff is fashionable these days. What is it they are supposed to be learning while redshirting? A system? Basketball is basketball. Too much is made about “systems and schemes”. These guys are scholarship players in college now. Most of them were all someplace or other in high school. They don’t have to learn how to dribble, pass, shoot etc at this stage of the game. Put the damned ball in the basket, bust your ass on the boards and live in the jock of the guy you’re guarding and you win games. Simple. If a kid can play, he can play as a freshman and he sure as hell is showing that in practice. We were barely able to put 7 men on the court tonight. That is terrible.

99.9% of Freshman don’t know how to play fundamental defense. They also don’t know the rotations and switches.

Can they play 1 on 1? Sure. But if you’ve watched any FU basketball you know our system is about motion screens and ball movement. That takes time to learn.

With the transfer portal in play every year, does redshirting make sense?

It suppose it makes sense for those who desire to build a team the traditional way and don’t want to rely on the portal. I see benefits in that.

I agree Bootie. On the other hand, does the player and his family see the benefit?

I think yeah, maybe not immediately, but in the end. Just like the way we do in football, you work while you wait, getting ready and better for when your time comes. Maybe that will all have to change in the changing environment but I prefer it. It takes patience which is not what a lot of people want these days.

I don't know about trusting an 18 year old kid and his family to buy in to a program with money etc floating around

Totally agree. I can assume our red shirting freshmen are not good enough to play and if they were good enough then they would have been playing...somewhat why Vanderwal played last year ..otherwise give Bronson a chance to see if he can help this team...especially as thin as they are..

Taking the redshirt off freshmen almost halfway thru the season makes no sense. When the 3 injured return there would be no PT available.
