The website Three Man Weave predicts a 4th place finish for the Paladins this year. They have ETSU as the favorite - "First Tier " - followed by UNCG, Wofford, Furman, and Samford as the "Second Tier." Those teams are followed by Mercer, Western Carolina, Chattanooga, The Citadel, and VMI in the standings.

Jordan Lyons was picked 1st team all-SoCon and Noah Gurley 2nd team. UNCG's Isaiah Miller was picked pre-season POY. ETSU had 4 players on the three all-SoCon teams. UNCG's freshman point guard Keyshawn Langley was pre-season newcomer of the year.

The writer seems to feel the Paladins have to prove something on offense this season because Rafferty was key to the offense last year -

"Despite returning four starters, Furman may struggle to replicate last season’s success without do-everything star forward Matt Rafferty, the team’s only true big and also its best passer. Bob Richey realized he had a gem in Rafferty, and he ran nearly all of the Paladins’ offensive action through him, whether that was via post ups or handoffs in the high post. He propped up an otherwise-pedestrian offense..."

He likes the defense though -
" It should be noted that Furman also had the SoCon’s best defense last year, as the Paladins’ disciplined man-to-man smartly avoided conceding free points at the line while disrupting offensive flow and forcing a high percentage of isolation possessions. Mounce, Gurley, and Slawson can all protect the rim a little bit, and junior Tre Clark will garner minutes due to his defense, even if he continues to turn the ball over at an alarming rate on the other end. Plus, Richey found ways to weaponize the quickness of his tiny guard duo, rather than letting them be repeatedly picked on and turned into liabilities. "

His conclusion:
"As incredible as Wofford’s seniors were (Magee and Jackson), Rafferty may have been the single most important player in the SoCon last year. Even without him, Richey has the pieces to maintain Furman’s defensive success, and if he finds a way to re-work the offensive attack, Furman will remain a dangerous contender."

On the other hand, Blue Ribbon Basketball magazine is out and picks Furman 2nd behind ETSU. They quote Bob Richey as praising the team's unselfish ball movement and active, aggressive defense. Richey talks up the contribution Jalen Slawson can make and mentions freshmen Marcus Foster and Jonny Lawrence as possible contributors.

This team will look differently on offense, and may get out into transition a little quicker. I do not think our O was "pedestrian" without Rafferty. He isn't giving our supporting crew the credit they deserve.

The contradiction in his analysis from my perspective, is that if Gurley plays well enough to garner 2nd team All SoCon accolades, we will finish 1st/2nd in the league....

Lawson is the key to real success for this team. He has huge defensive upside but needs to show more offensive promise. If he breaks out, FU can win the league.

Rafferty is a very big loss - no question about it. Other teams lose as well though.

Another preview. It is a review of the SoCon Media day predictions. LINK

Furman comment - the writer thinks the Paladins will finish ahead of UNCG.

"I’m HUGE on this Furman team! They are yet another team that I think is good enough to land inside the bubble. They won some big games last year and actually cracked the rankings earlier in the season, had 25 overall wins, and have four starters back. Notable OOC games include going to Auburn and Alabama, and it wouldn’t shock me at all if they ended up winning all the rest of them and entering conference play with a bloated record."

Ken Pomeroy's pre-season ratings are out.

Furman starts at #105, which is second best of SoCon teams. ETSU is #74, UNCG is #108, Wofford #121, Samford #128, Mercer #188, Western Carolina #217, VMI #268, Chattanooga #279, and the Citadel is last at #302. Looking a little deeper - ETSU has an adjusted efficiency rating of 10.91, Furman's is 5.75, UNCG is at 5.32 and Wofford is 3.63. That means ETSU would be about a 5 point favorite over the Paladins and the Spartans on a neutral court. ETSU has the top rated offense in the SoCon and UNCG the best defense. ETSU is top #100 in D1 in both defense and offense. Furman is solid on both offense and defense. Wofford and Samford are top 100 on offense but much weaker defensively.

Just a reminder - Pomeroy is NOT making a prediction for the season. This is his reset starting positions based on last year's ratings adjusted for production lost. ETSU returns almost everyone from a 24 game winner. Wofford dropped over 100 spots from last year's finish - one of the biggest drops by anyone in D1.

This not homerism...Furman has a better chance at the NCAA Tournament this season than last as good as MR was...Probably the best chance since 1980...That's facts.

I happened to be at Timmons yesterday afternoon while the team was working out. Mounce and Gurley have both beefed up. Significantly.

This got me to review where Furman finished with KenPom each year over the Niko-CBR period:

2019... 59
2018... 95
2017... 106
2016... 175
2015... 309
2014... 342

I don't have the history to report where the Paladins began each of those seasons, but the overall end-results have been meteoric.

I’m not an NBA fan really. But I am reading an article about how Houston Rockets reunited Westbrook and Harden. Not sure how that will work out but I was interested in a description of what Houston does offensively. Spacing the floor, shooting 3’s, and very few mid range jumpers. D’Antoni said “If you take the right shot, we do not care if you miss shots.”

Sound familiar?

I do not want anyone trying to be James Harden on our team.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
