Mercer picks up Alex Holt, a 6'8" 245 transfer, from High Point. Video and stats indicate Holt is a low post guy exclusively. A position they certainly need help at. He should get immediate eligibility as this is his first transfer. Holt comes in with two years left to play.

There are still hundreds of D1 transfers unsigned. A buyers market now.

I think there is now a trend that some coaches feel that that they don't need to fill all 13 scholarships every year. Most teams have a 8-10 man rotation. Maybe a couple of spots for depth in case of injury or illness. The 13th guy or 12th won't play much anyway. Furman redshirted two this season and I don't think we were ever hurt by it. Those last spots are mainly developmental. With the transfer situation now a lot of those guys will leave if they aren't playing. They don't want to sit a year or two to develop. Why pay for a scholarship and spend the effort developing if the guy justs bails early?

Possibly, another take is that its hard for the dumpster fires that are Mercer and Wofftard basketball to find any decent players that care to go there ;)

Key word may be undergrad. I think the rules are different for grad transfers. With the extra Covid year of eligibility there are more than the usual grad transfers.

I did a quick overview of SoCon transfers.Only two appear to be multiple transfer guys and one of them is probably a grad transfer.

With about a month until classes start it looks like most SoCon teams are now at or near their scholarship limits. Mercer has added two transfers - 5'10" junior Caleb Hunter from Mississippi Valley State and 7'2" Sidi Diallo from UMKC. Hunter didn't play last season (injury?), but averaged 14 ppg in 21-22. He was second on the team in scoring, assists, and steals. Diallo is a sophomore from Dakar, Senegal who didn't play much as a freshman. Wofford has added 6'8" 230 lb. freshman Belal El Shakery, a native of Egypt. Both teams are now at 12 scholarships They have added needed height but each probably have room for another front court guy. Chattanooga, Mercer, and Wofford have 12 listed scholarship players and the rest of the conference teams have the full 13 player limit.

Still several hundred transfers looking for a new home.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
