I agree with those (apparently few) who consider potential basketball investment payoffs for FU to be somewhat greater than potential football investment payoffs for FU.
I meant to hit the like button instead of dislike! It’s really a no-brainer that potentially our best money making sport is basketball.

Thanks to Monday for putting that series of articles out there. Reading it makes me continue to wonder why Furman has, and makes me wonder equally as much why so so very many other schools (not just Furman) have, such a high relative valuation on football.

As a glutton for punishment, I scanned the rest of Eben Novy-Williams‘ series. FCS Football is not mentioned in any other of the 6 installments. Basically, Eben Novy-Williams has reached the earth-shattering conclusion that G5 Football pretty much sucks for the schools at this level. I agree. They are “posers” in an unsustainable model. We’ll see how they resolve it. Not the case with FCS Football, despite the charlatans posting on this page & Eben Novy-Williams, who are trying to convince you that G5 = FCS. It doesn’t. Very different financial model.

“Layoffs among New York reporters include:...sports business reporter Eben Novy-Williams.”

Perhaps Mr. Williams should spend a bit more time worrying about his own sustainability.

Sports reporters Erik Matuszewski and Mason Levinson were also laid off. Sports reporters Scott Soshnick and Eben Novy-Williams remain in New York to write sports business
stories.

I can only find that he is still employed by Bloomberg, including his LinkedIn.

Encountering this fallacious sentence within the first few paragraphs of the article, do I really need to read any further?

“According to the Council for Aid to Education, only three of the 10 schools that raised at least $500 million from alumni in 2015 have FBS football teams. The rest of the list is largely composed of academically excellent universities such as Harvard, Princeton, and Johns Hopkins.”

Facts are a terrible thing to ignore.

#1 There's probably little if anything from the Top Ten endowment/ alumni giving schools that is generalizable to everyone else. What's good for Harvard, might not be good for Clemson.

#2 The biggest achievers among us went to elite academic schools, have little interest in intercollegiate athletics, and have more disposable income to donate.

Since "unit" has been used in this thread in a different context, allow me to use "parcel". I understand that the units are earned and distributed as stated above. It may (or may not) be done this way in all conferences, but I understand that the SoCon gives the earning team (usually a one and done) two parcels, each other member one parcel, and the SoCon keeps a parcel (perhaps multiple parcels) to fund the SoCon, I suppose thereby swapping money so that members write a smaller check.

So, you're citing an article about his termination from Bloomberg written about 15 months before he wrote an article for Bloomberg? Huh. . .

I had my Football photography published in a newspaper 1 time. I wasn’t employed by that paper. I was 15.

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage

GoPaladins.com is not affiliated with Furman University or its athletics programs.
