It’s almost like a little league draft night in late February.

Around 1200 D1 players have joined the portal.Less than 40 have announced signing with new school. More players will probably transfer. Nothing surprising with us not signing anyone yet.

Plus, given that CBR may be a goner, future head coaches JG or TJ may have a preference for certain players.

Maybe this already exists at even Furman, but it seems to me that if it does not already exist, then even Furman needs at least 1 or 2 new full-time paid positions added to our basketball staff dedicated to managing information and contacts regarding portal comings and goings. And I do realize that recruiting and retention has been a very major part of the coaching staff’s job for many years.
Portal management seems like new work that did not exist in the past, even though recruiting has always been work.
(The same thing can be said for NIL related work.)
Successful basketball at Furman (and anywhere) has gotten more expensive and will continue to get more expensive.
If we do not respond positively to that, we will have to be satisfied with mediocrity such as a lot of FBS football schools (also FCS, to be sure) appear to be.
And yes, I realize we are progressing fairly well on our efforts at $40 million in facilities upgrades: but be sure to look at what certain other schools already have done and/or are continuing to do regarding their basketball facilities. (And if you look at the dollars, be sure you adjust those for inflation and to 2024-2025 dollars and to the Greenville SC economy, not to some cheaper place.)

Speaking of the staff, wish we still had Jordan Lyons on the staff...

There are still a ton of talented graduate students out there in all Divisions with the extra covid year, which works great for us to put together a good team, this however will be the 4th and final year of tons of those extra players from the 2020-21 season...

No excuse not to have 2-3 fantastic 3 point shooters. They are out there in droves and already test driven in DII/DIII. A 3 is a 3 regardless if division. You can shoot or you can’t. Find a couple who can play some D. Also troll for some size. This can turn out fun. In DII you get new guys every year and it’s the transfers who make immediate impact. Don’t underestimate the ability of college coaches to ignore their best players and run them off.

At this point, anyone is likely to leave at any mid-major school. Might as well assume most players leave at the end of the year

from gville,sc

Entered the NBA Draft in 2023, went through the process and worked out for the Brooklyn Nets before withdrawing to return to GCU for 2023-24.

Not just mid-majors, anywhere.
