Ryan Soulis is a 6'10" (also listed as 6'11" in some places) high school junior at the Asheville School. Soulis recently got his first D1 offer from Stony Brook and has been picking up interest from other schools. He was at UNCG last week when the Paladins beat UNCG.

Phenom: How was your visit to UNCG?
Soulis: It was great, I got to watch their game against Furman, a tough game for them. Got to meet all the coaches, and went down to the locker room to say what was up to some of their players.

Phenom: Who else has been reaching out your way and showing interest?
Soulis: Recently, I’ve had Charlotte, ETSU, UC Irvine, Boise State, Furman, and LIU reach out. Some notable schools that have shown interest are Wake Forest, Northwestern, Rhode Island, Seton Hall, Chattanooga, and South Carolina. I’m supposed to visit Furman this weekend, and Charlotte and South Carolina in the near future.

Soulis is in the middle of the picture, coach Johnson on the right and Derin Saran, a 6'4" guard who is a HS teammate of Soulis on the left. Serin is a player we have shown interest in before, but haven't offered. He now has 16 D1 offers and will decide in the Spring which one to accept.

Good article in The Athletic today about how Duke is going in a different direction in recruiting. They will be recruiting less freshmen and going more to the transfer portal. It seems as though many of the P5 schools are doing the same. Wouldn't you think this has to help schools like Furman that want to develop players and build the man?

In Noah Gurely's case it hurt us a bit when he left for P5.

In Slawson and Bothwell's case it helped us when they stayed.

If our players take the Slawson and Bothwell mentality and will stay with us instead of transferring to P5 once they put up quality stats then we're in good shape.

We can use Gurley as a case study that the grass is not always greener, goes to Alabama and is riding the bench.

Meanwhile the other 2 guys are competing for SoCon player of the year, and still being talked about as having Pro career potential.

The thinking for 2024:

We have offered 2 PG's in the 2024 class, so obviously want a PG.

We must know we will have 1 open scholarship for '24-25.

Who could that be? Maybe Marcus Foster won't be back for his 6th year of college basketball or maybe Carter Whitt won't be back for his 5th year of college basketball.

Whoever we take will probably redshirt '24-25 season and get to play 4 years in newly renovated Timmons Arena, as both JP Pegues and PJay Smith will be seniors (as would Carter Whitt).

Jack Staunton is a 6'2" (also listed at 6'1") guard from North HS in Downers Grove, Ill. He helped lead DGN to 4th place in the Illinois 4A state tournament this season, their first ever trip to the finals. Staunton is a good athlete and passer probably best known for his excellent shooting touch. In an AAU game yesterday he hit 7 threes and scored 34 of his team's 53 points. He plays AAU ball for the same program that Ben Vanderwal was with.

Over the course of last year’s grassroots season, Jack Stanton has some of the top performances of the spring and summer while playing with Breakaway Basketball. He had a stellar performance at the NY2LA Summer Jam in July leading Breakaway to the 16U title with 25 points in the semifinal game and 31 points in the championship game.

His breakout play has continued into his junior season at Downers Grove North High School (IL). The high academic 6’2” point guard is currently averaging 16 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists per game to have them out a 13-1 record.

With his play, plenty of division one programs have started recruiting Stanton. Some of the schools showing the most interest include Belmont, Columbia, Dartmouth, Furman, Southeast Missouri State, and Southern Illinois. So far, he has visited a pair of these programs in Furman and Southern Illinois. “Both visits were amazing. I really enjoyed both of the schools. Furman’s staff was great, and the team culture was unbelievable. SIU also has a great culture and a lot of support from the area around them and I also enjoyed the staff. Facilities were very nice at both places and are improving as well,” Stanton said about his visits during the fall.

The 6-1 combo guard has proven to be a spark-plug scorer, thanks in large part to his perimeter shooting and his ability to get his shot off. He thrives both off the dribble with pull-up jumpers, in transition and with catch-and-shoot threes in the halfcourt.

Stanton, who remains widely under-the-radar, has been terrific. He’s putting up a team-high 15.9 points a game for a team that’s 23-3. A deadly sniper, Stanton is shooting an impressive 46 percent from beyond the arc while making a heavy dose of them with 79 threes made on the season.

I believe Foster has played 3 seasons - he played 18 games in 20/21, 34 games in 21/22, and 36 games in 22/23. So i think he has 2 yrs of eligibility left assuming he takes the COVID year.
