Our offense is a perfect matchup against the pack line. In general UVA is the perfect matchup for us. Over Richey’s tenure we’ve fared better vs teams that aren’t exceedingly athletic and apply a ton of pressure in the passing lanes(maybe besides Auburn 2019 we played very well). On defense we struggle with teams that have a ton of size and can really crash the glass on offense. All of these things are the opposite of UVA. They don’t contest the passing lanes whatsoever and focus on getting back-on defense vs crashing the glass. In terms of our specific Princeton 5-out style Vs the pack line It also should work in our favor. If you remember the UMBC upset they stretched out the pack line as much as possible with a lot of shooters on the court and if you do that like we do, you’re going to get good looks from 3 we just have to hit them. But our motion can cause problems for them as well. They hard hedge all ball screens which relies on backside coverage and our constant off ball actions(cutting, pin downs) and dribble handoffs they’re gonna be in a lot of uncomfortable spots and we’re gonna the looks we want. On offense they run a lot of ball screens and I expect us to be able to switch a lot. Also another note, may need to go in expecting a big offensive performance from slawson, pegues, supporting cast because UVA has ACC defensive player of the year Reece Beekman and you can expect him to be guarding Bothwell.

Additional Perspectives
Furman is one of 12* schools that have now made the NCAA Tournament for the 7th time in history. Actually, the number is 11* if you count an additional 4 years when Louisiana* appeared in the Tournament but later had the appearances vacated by the NCAA for whatever reasons. (So the Ragin' Cajuns actually have appeared in 11* years, but 4 of them don't count.)
The other schools, besides Furman that have appeared in the NCAA Tournament 7 times are:
Not appearing this year:
Ball State, 1-6
Boston University, 2-7
Dartmouth, 10-7
Long Island University, 0-7
Louisiana*, 1-6 (plus 3-5 in those 4 years which the NCAA vacated)
Louisiana-Monroe, 0-7
Nebraska, 0-7
Appearing this year:
16 seed Fairleigh-Dickinson, 1-6 + TBD, playing 16 seed Texas Southern, then playing 1 seed Purdue if FD beats TS
13 seed Furman, 1-6 + TBD, playing 4 seed Virginia
13 seed Kent State, 4-6 + TBD, playing 4 seed Indiana
12 seed Oral Roberts, 4-6 +TBD, playing 5 seed Duke
14 seed UC Santa Barbara, 1-6 + TBD, playing 3 seed Baylor
There are 51 current D-1 schools that have been in the NCAA Tournament fewer times than Furman, that is, between 1 time and 6 times.
There are 45 current D-1 schools that have never been in the NCAA Tournament. Among those 45 schools with zero ever appearances are Army-West Point, Citadel, William & Mary, High Point, and Elon.
Let's hope for the best against Virginia; for continuing good publicity for Furman from this 2023 NCAA Tournament appearance; for improving on our 1-6 NCAA Tournament W-L record as soon as possible; for getting into our 8th NCAA Tournament much sooner than 43 years from now; for Coach Bob Richey to continue to coach Furman Basketball as long as we can possibly keep him; for the best also the next time we play Citadel and High Point; and for all Furman supporters, players, parents, coaches, support personnel, students, alumni, administration, media, community, etc., to experience much enjoyment and blessing from Furman's appearance in this 2023 NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Go Furman!

For those with access to The Athletic (worth the price), an in depth analysis on Slawson and Furman’s chances against Virginia. https://theathletic.com/4301587/2023/03 ... directed=1
Just a small section of the article. “ Sometimes the team will play small with Slawson at the five and force bigs out into space against him. He’s lethal when that happens, because there are few point forwards around the country better at executing high-level bounce passes to cutters. The team will run horns sets with him at the foul line area, where he can act both as a dribble-hand-off hub or as an initiator looking for backdoor cuts. He can grab and go on the break to lead the offense himself, or can post up and draw doubles. But most often, he’ll trail the play and receive the ball at the top of the key, allowing him to survey the court and start processing exactly how to attack the defenders around him. To top that off, Furman’s players are well-drilled around him. As soon as he sees an advantage or draws the double, Slawson’s going to spot it and find his open man. Slawson’s passing ability and the team’s cutting around him is a big part of why Furman has made a higher percentage of their 2-point field goal attempts — 59.1 percent — than any team in the country.”

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
