Anyone rejoicing over this coach moving from SU to TAMU needs to keep in mind that other SoCon schools will be similarly celebrating Furman’s loss WHEN (not if) Coach Richey gets the offer he does not want to refuse. Our day will come. Enjoy Coach Richey while we have him.
No need to waste time celebrating SU’s loss.
One source states $1.5 million a year, 5-year deal for this former SU coach.
How close can Furman get to matching that to keep Coach Richey from leaving? Maybe 45% of that?
And also how close can Furman get to matching the NIL riches that exist at many schools (of which TAMU has to the potential to be at the very top)? Maybe 5% of what TAMU already does in NIL and maybe 0.05% of what TAMU has the potential to do in NIL?
Reminder NIL no longer exists it is payroll. The media wants to keep calling it that but it is strictly pay for play now.
Whatever.
The outcome is the same?
Worse?
Better?
It seems that Furman is maybe still in about the same situation whether you call it NIL or salary budget.
A good explanation was in an interview on last night’s PBS News Hour. William Brangham was the interviewer. The interviewee did indicate that it would be outright salary, not NIL, by this summer. One or both of them indicated that NIL is an out-of-date term.
I had a conversation with someone very well connected to Davidson's basketball program.

It was stated that while Davidson is now flush with cash, they are worse off than they were. They moved to another 1 bid conference where they aren't particularly competitive. They don't recruit high school players. The coaches spend their time in the recruiting portal and looking for European players.

Davidson is essentially operating in an arena where they have the money, but they are going head to head with all the major programs for limited availability (the portal). They aren't successful doing it. They've essentially jettisoned the model that made them successful for decades.

For what it's worth, the individual wanted Davison back in the Southern Conference. They aren't getting anything out of the A10.
There are a good many Davidson fans that want back in the SOCON. I hope the conference will nix a school that has already left twice .
I would love to get Davidson and College of Charleston back in the SoCon. Those were always exciting games.

I second that.
Which are you seconding?

#99513 by Roundball - I would love to get Davidson and College of Charleston back in the SoCon.

OR

#99512 by tim - Davidson fans that want back in the SOCON. I hope the conference will nix a school that has already left twice.

FUBeAR would love to have Davidson back IF, AND ONLY IF, they reinstate fully-funded FCS scholarship football.
College of Chuck can return IF, AND ONLY IF, they go ahead and become a Women’s (only) College.
E*Loan can NEVER return.

Second THAT!

No football=No SoCon. The league is perfect right now. Play everyone home and home, add teams that goes away
Football is the same 8 SoCon 3 ooc.

Upgrade football and I'm good with Davy . That may be in the works with their new stadium. Hard pass on Chucky and say 'bye to UNCG.

Counting out a school because of football is a losing proposition. Basketball needs to be king in the SoCon. I look forward to even better competition in the SoCon.

We can schedule Davy & COC without their returning to the Conference.

Solution to that:
Add Davidson College to SoCon for all sports except football.
Let them stay in Pioneer for football, with the stipulation that they become a football-playing member as soon as 1 or more of the current 9 football schools depart the SoCon for FBS or for another FCS-level conference.

No, 80 would suffice.

About Us

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage

GoPaladins.com is not affiliated with Furman University or its athletics programs.
