Furman vs. Wofford March 10th (Championship Game)

I’m grateful for and proud of our team, our coach, and our 25 wins.
Go Furman.
It is a fact that Wofford now has won the SoCon Tournament and gone to the NCAA Tournament aka March Madness aka Big Dance 6 times in the last 16 years and Furman has done that 1 time in the last 45 years.

After reading all the previous comments I agree with Dins & Heels/Jesse's analysis. Our shot selection in the last 2 minutes just wasn't very good. Too many forced three pointers. The 1-3-1 worked good but our man to man in the last 8 minutes just wasn't good enough. I do think Woffy got every call when they drove the lane. Not so much for us but the Refs didn't decide the game.

With that said hat's off to Woffy, they played their a$$es off and hit their shots when it counted. But we played great too just not quite great enough.

Congratulations to Coach R and the team for a tremendous season that was better than a lot of us expected.

If that is your take after watching that game you know less about basketball than you do football and that is saying something. Both teams hit shots with guys all over them. Mind you they did this while playing their 3rd game in 3 days. You really need a new hobby … perhaps gardening where you can critique the plants on their poor growth.

Hardly. I’ll guarantee 80% of people in that stadium don’t even know difference in ICING vs HEDGING. (Blue if you will ). I know one of the guys standing in our latest video on new arena. HUGE FURMAN BBALL FAN. HUGE !! Helping finance it as a donor ! I asked him whether he preferred icing vs hedging. He had no idea what I was talking about with icing.

He’s a great coach but that was an unfortunate mistake. 5 or 6 turnovers on Wofford during our 1-3-1. and they were completely discombobulated. Completely. And then we switch back to M2M ? WTH ? Go with what’s working ! Also Scott Van Pelt just agreed with us. called us out a little for getting too desperate in those last shots. But really gotta keep Wofford off 92 points. Tough loss. I felt it overall was a great game. We had lots of guys step up at different times in the tourney. Wofford won it rather than us losing it. I thought we might win when we had the ball up 4 with two mins left. Championship game , beat the # 4 & # 1 seeds, being up in this one with 1:27 left, being 25-9. We overachieved & it was a great year.

Dwight Perry and his staff pantsed Bob Richey - period. Your "big" guys just want to shoot threes and wave to the crowd (Hien, Johnston, etc). PJay is a stud, and has my respect. But WC out worked, out-grinded, out hustled, and even had a better fan turnout (as it looked on TV) than Furman. Live it. Love it. Learn it.

I almost thought we should literally just foul old granny shot guy because he is 31% for the year. HACK A SHAQ ! . Im serious - When they were hitting 3s why not just hack him every play with a backup. Water eventually finds its level. They would have averaged less than 1 PPP. 31% ! he was (Filewich) 3-7 from the line. Which is actually high for him ! LOL - like I said, less than one Point per Possession. I'd have to look but I think Woff was averaging much better than Filewich 3-7 FT in a standard possession considering all the 3s etc.

We don't really have that "walking double double" guy. Like say an Ian Schiefflin at Clemson.. and he shoots 3s in addition to playing inside. But he is an absolute BLUE COLLAR DOG and just gets rebounds. He eats glass. I understand we shoot 3s but so does Clemson. just using CU an example because they shoot a decent amount of 3s.. They shot THIRTY SEVEN THREES vs GTech ... 25 3s vs UNC. and yet they rebound very well. They killed Duke on the glass. Killed UNC on the glass etc.

I have watched about 5-7 games of ours. but we don't seem to have that killer rebounder? or if so, who is it?

we seem to have a lot of guys who average 5 rebounds. Now a lot of our guys may average 23 minutes so put it at 30 minutes thats 7-8 rebounds. Filewich averageas 27 minutes with almost 10 rebounds

Fun game to watch. Unfortunate it didn't work out for us.

For a while there in the second half, Wofford couldn't miss. They were not going to let Smith or Anderson take uncontested shots. Bowser getting in foul trouble with 11 or 12 minutes left in the half was critical because he was one guy that could really force Wofford to back off the pressure on the perimeter.

It was a good basketball game. Glad I got to watch our school on national TV.

A lot of feelings this morning as I reflect on the season, the tourament, and THAT GAME...

The GAME- incredible atmosphere deserving of that rivalry. Looking forward to having that at Timmons next year. Furman fans weren't particularly nice to Woffy, but drunk Wofford section was unnecessarily profane. That said, the crowd being into it certainly can fuel your team and I hope FU fans continue to show up to Asheville as well as home.
To me, Wofford looked a little more fresh and their senior-heavy team showed confidence and played their game all night. Their bench contributed and allowed Filewich, Tripp, and the Baileys to rest up.

To me, Furman has only a handful of players that play strong Defense AND can score. It's easy to have the wrong balance of guys out there to where the other team goes on a run or we can't consistently make buckets. If any shooters have cold nights, there aren't many good alternatives. There is a combination of 3-4 players that is not particularly consistent on either O or D, that when they are out there together, we collapse every time. When we got into foul trouble, we were forced to put some of those combos out there and nobody stepped up to fill the void. CBR is balancing a lot of things in a game like that, and little things like one player being cold, making mental mistakes, or committing unnecissary fouls can make it really tough to find that sweet spot. Kudos to C. Johnston on strong contribution from bench.

The SEASON: We weren't supposed to be anything special, but we were eactly that. An incredible hot start, road warrior mentality, and despite a cold January spell, CBR coached his butt off and created a cohesive team that showed poise, never gave up, and represented FU culture to the last. I loved watching this team play. Will miss watching PJay, Nick, and Garrett, but the future is bright.

Yes the offense bogged down but the defense was the real culprit right to the end. Up 4 we miss a shot they get an uncontested gimme layup in 5 seconds, miss another shot they get a wide open 3 with no purple in the same area code in 6 seconds. So they get 5 easy points in 11 seconds of possesion time. Heard CBR is a top 5 candidate for the Virginia job.
