JP gave us Furman fans a moment that will forever be etched in our memories. I'm thankful for him and his time at Furman. He probably received life changing money and it is difficult to blame him for taking care of his family. Time to move on and cheer for this GREAT team that CBR and staff has built.

I share the sentiment of those above who've moved-on. But I'm sure everybody has a soft-spot for "the shot".

There's a bigger lesson here, not only for the players (be careful with the seduction of NIL $$), but also for the wider community on the lookout for potential high schoolers & transfers. CBR & coaches are taking on a very heavy lift. They're looking not only to identify "diamonds in the rough" overlooked by the P5, but also to only those with an unselfish team-mentality. Otherwise the program is exposed as it was last year - to players who not only failed to gel, but who ultimately transferred out.

My guess is that if given the choice between a proven high-quality individual with heart who's only rated a 3-star and a highly rated sharp-shooting point-guard who craves the limelight, CBR & coaches will take the former every time. The trick is how to filter for only those kinds of players. A heavy lift, indeed.

The JP situation is a helpful cautionary tale. Maybe in his case the money made it a no brainer, idk, but there are potential downsides - this won't make it easier for him to get a good start overseas, for instance, and while Auburn is a good school, players in the future could be faced with larger academic downgrades (also relevant financially).

You can’t blame any of them for taking the money, and maybe it’s the right decision for right now, but… There are other ways and opportunities to earn money in life, but you only get one chance at being an athlete in your prime. Maybe he gets a great job after college and makes similar money to what he’s making now… then when he’s in his mid-forties and he can’t go back to his youth, he might be wishing he had not sold his prime time as an athlete to play 4 minutes a game in front of a big crowd. I think that’s gonna hurt really bad one day.

And…it’s now nothing more than a short-term business transaction with a service provider.

FUBeAR was absolutely elated, recently, when a plumber came to his house and expertly unclogged his toilet. FUBeAR paid him well for his services provided, and, with words of gratitude in addition to the nice check, showed him out of the FUBeAR mansion.

If the next toilet that plumber gets paid to unclog blows up on him and completely covers him in human excrement, FUBeAR feels bad for that plumber on a human level, of course, but only a smidge worse than FUBeAR feels for any other plumber involved in a porcelain IED eruption.
