Good thing our 5 is hitting 64% ;)
Absolutely amazing. And he does it against some of the toughest competition. His only weakness was foul shooting and now he's knocking them down like crazy. His stats (shooting, scoring, rebounding, assists) are off the charts and yet his biggest asset is that he makes all the players around him better !

are both shooting 38% from the field. (Hunter and Lyons)

I wonder how many teams have won this many games with their 1 and 2 shooting like that?

Curious. One positive is that surely their % will only improve?
How many teams start two players under 6 feet tall and have nobody over 6-8 on the entire roster ?

Uh, lots of mid major teams? Give it a rest.
OK, since you couldn't think of any I'll give it a rest. I got that stat from an expert college basketball analyst who was commenting on what a remarkable win it was against Villanova for a team with no starting guards over 5-11 and no player on the roster over 6-8. He meant it as a compliment to our players and coaching staff on an incredible effort and an amazing upset win. I took it that way as well. Sorry if you were offended by it but it's probably true.

Well, UNCG started two 6'0" guards and a 6'3" guard against us. They started 6'10" and 6'8" at forward. The two starting forwards combined for 12 points and 8 rebounds, which was less than Rafferty had by himself (22 pts,10 rebs.) The average height of Furman's and UNCG's starters is exactly the same.

VMI has been starting a 6'10" center, but it hasn't kept them out of last place. Mercer has starting guards at 6'3" and 6'4" and players at 6'10",6'11", and 7'0" on the roster (plus a 6'11" 255 guy sitting out until eligible next year.) They are tied for next to last.
UNCG's starters weren't the problem.
It was the two 6-9 guys (Hamilton and Hunter) off the bench that combined for 24 points that kicked our butt. How did that compare with our big guys off the bench ? Here's a hint. Jalen never took off his sweats. They also had a 6-3 guard (Massa) who played 19 minutes.

VMI's 6-10 Junior Center Tyler Creammer had 13 points and 5 rebounds against Kentucky in a game VMI led for much of the first half before losing by 10. I doubt the Wildcats took the Keydets lightly since VMI beat Kentucky 111-103 the last time they played in 2008 when The Citadels current coach Duggar Baucom first employed that crazy press run and gun style of play. Creammer was injured and didn't play in VMI's three point loss last night at ETSU. Too bad he could have been the difference maker.

Hunter is a 6'4" wing/small forward, not a big man. Hamilton played well. Massey was a starter before being replaced by Miller against Furman, and he only scored 2 points in those 19 minutes. UNCG's bench under performed their starters. They played over 33% of the minutes but scored less than 30% of the points. Furman's bench played only about 12% of the minutes but scored over 25% of our points.

Our starters were outplayed as a group by UNCG. Lyons and Hunter had eight turnovers between them and shot 36%. The Spartans guards hit over 46% with fewer turnovers. Miller, who has hit less than 30% of his three pointers in his career, hit 4 against us and had a career high 25 points. Mounce and Gurley had 3 rebounds total. They shot the ball well but only took 8 shots between them.

BTW, VMI's close game at Kentucky was because they hit 19 three point shots - the most any team has ever made against Kentucky. VMI hit 50% from behind the arc. Bubba Parham, 5'11" guard for VMI, had 35 points and hit 10-16 threes. Kentucky utterly dominated VMI inside with a 42-14 scoring advantage in the paint and a 43-22 rebound advantage. I didn't see that game but my guess is Creammer got a few layups because Kentucky was more concerned about VMI's three point shooting.

GoPaladins.com is the latest iteration of The Unofficial Furman Football Page. Launched in August of 1996, The UFFP welcomes fans of all FCS football teams - and fans of the more inferior sports, too - for discussion, cameraderie, and even the occasional smack talk.

For example, Furman has nearly twice as many Southern Conference football championships as the next best SoCon member, and over three times as many as The Citadel....which is why they must carry our luggage
