Grass not always greener

ESPN+ has an article up today about college transfers. Noah Gurley is mentioned as a transfer that isn't working out.

"Noah Gurley, Alabama: A slashing, inside-outside forward who could make shots from the perimeter seemed like a perfect fit for Nate Oats' system, but it hasn't panned out thus far for Gurley in Tuscaloosa. With Oats opting to play smaller 1-4 and the emergence of freshman Charles Bediako at the center spot, there simply hasn't been much room for Gurley to be more than a bench piece. He's averaging 6.4 points after putting up 15.4 last season.

Storm Murphy's move from Wofford to Virginia Tech and Mason Faulkner's move from Western Carolina to Louisville are both also rated as mistakes so far.

Silvio De Sousa's move from Kansas to UTC and Ques Glover's transfer from Florida to Samford have been successful.

Well if the actual purpose of a grad transfer is to get a grad degree, then the on-court results are secondary and indicate nothing about whether the grass was greener.

Another way of looking at it is - the uncertainty over how the on-court part will go is a major factor that holds players back from transferring. I'm quite sure that the number of players who at least muse about transferring is vastly higher than the number that actually do.

Not hugely surprised by Gurley. He finished strong at FU with some of his best games toward the end but was often inconsistent during his career. Unlike Rafferty, he also just seemed to not be able to finish on some of his short easy shots.

He would have been huge for us this year.

And given that he graduated, can't we just freaking root for the kid? His development is proof CBR knows what he's doing if players put in the work, which Noah did!

He graduated, but not sure he HAD to tranfer. CBR seemed surprised and never mentioned it in any of his postseason interviews. Where theres a will there is a way.

Noah’s desire has always been to pursue an MBA upon completion of his Bachelors and basketball has ALWAYS been a means to an end. Extra-curricula activities have never overshadowed his goal of obtaining a post-graduate education in the field of his choice. In plain terms, if Furman had an MBA program, Noah would not have transferred. So, for him, the grass is actually “greener” in Tuscaloosa.
