Street and Smiths 2019

The new Street and Smiths College Football issue just hit the stands up here on the I95 corridor.
The good news is that the Paladind are ranked 14th. Wofford checks in at number 8. JMU is Number 1. I think its only a matter of time until JMU jumps to the FBS.
Grayson Atkins is the First Team Pre Season All America place-kicker. He may be the best kicker we've ever had.
They pick us to finish 2d behind Wofford.
ETSU, Chattanooga, Mercer, Samford, Citadel, WCU and VMI follow in that order.
Its important to get off to a good start. We have had some tough early games in recent seasons, but we have been prone to underestimating some early opponents as well.

Would be nice to start the season in the pre-season FCS polls but probably not likely since we finished #32 in the coaches poll and #30 in the STATS poll in 2018.

I am sure Wofford will be No. 2 or 3

Not a lot of thought goes into the pre-season FCS poll(s). They pretty much start with the ending poll(s) from the previous season.

I'm finding it hard to understand how these two statements are not self-contradictory.

Pretty simple. If you did not finish in the top 25 at the end of the season you're likely to not start in the pre-season top 25. Would be nice but very unlikely.

Didn't Woffy lose a lot of defense? Why all the love for them?

Because they win games that are significant. Just answering your question, not saying that I love them. (I love them when they do NOT win.)

I may eventually be proven wrong in this, but I think Wofford is probably overhyped.
The Terriers lose their top two rushers - Lennox McAfee and Andre Stoddard. Those two accounted for over 40% of all carries by the Wofford offense last year.
They also graduate a lot of their defensive two-deep, including both starting corners, their all-conference safety (Jo Jo Tilllery), and all American defensive lineman (Miles Brown), among others. Brown is, in my opinion, the most critical loss. He was a one-man wrecking crew in Wofford's 3-4 defense and one of those guys offenses had to account for on every play.
I have not seen enough yet to know how to evaluate Conklin. He inherited a lot of talent from Mike Ayers, particularly on defense. I think the jury is still out on his staff until we see what happens once Ayers' players move on.
At bottom, Wofford has earned their national recognition. If Furman closes out their game against ETSU, we are the sole SoCon champs, the autobid, and would have the national recognition as the SoCon's best team. Sometimes it is just perception. I saw nothing last year, though, to make me think Wofford is better than we are.

What Jackal said. Looking forward to spanking the ankle-biters on their home field.

I'm generally bullish (perhaps too bullish) on the season.
I watched the games last year. I truly think we will be the team to beat this year. If we get some consistent play out of the QB, I think we'll be solid.

It's breakout year. I anticipate the best Furman team since the '04-'05 Ingle Martin years. They will be on a mission.

I agree. I fully expect football and men's hoops to both win SoCon titles this year.
